These were the fabulous games from Harrowing in the North
We had three Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and one Darker Malleus, an indie Hunter Game.
The Heart of the Matter
Run by The Dark Knight of the Twisted Moon.
Zlatan Dogskull is dead, slain by the poxes of Semyon Twistwater after a minor skirmish deep in the Forest of Shadows. You have travelled many days to reach the Herdstone, so that your warband can erect a suitable Monolith of iron and thorns in his honour. Apparently awaiting you at the Herdstone is a Chaos Warrior, claiming to have been sent here by a vision. You have had to put aside the quandary of what to do with this fellow traveller on the paths of Chaos, whilst you set about the more important task of politicking to decide which of you will have the honour of eating the heart of Zlatan, and taking his place as leader of the warband. The time for the ceremony is drawing near, as the Brays continue their construction. Whichever of you becomes Champion, is sure to grow great in the favour of the Ruinous Powers.
This scenario will use WFRP Classic Edition and Realms of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness & Lost and the Damned.
The Three Trials of Neu Bergsberg (Against the Horde Part III) Run by John Foody
South of Skeggi, the imperial settlement of Neu Bergsberg battles for survival against the horrors of Lustria. Funded by the Elector Count and Grand Baron Aldebrand Ludenhof the town has been beset by corruption, infighting, raiders, and worse, and a year ago stood on the verge of ruin. Now there are signs of prosperity following the arrival of the vitki Lorn who said that if the council could stand united for seven years against three great trials the town would stand for a hundred years. As one of the Council of Five Neu Bergsberg’s survival, and the survival of everything you have risked, rests on your shoulders.
A scenario where the characters are Council members. Based in WFRP4e Lustria but with very little rules although incorporating a version of the settlement rules from the Lustria sourcebook.
The Great Wain Robbery, run by Rob
Every year, Baron Von Mark’s tithes all come rumbling into town on one big old Wain.
It’s heavily guarded, kept under lock and key. His best troops patrol the grounds.
His basement vault is impregnable. Nobody’s ever stolen so much as a pfennig from the Baron. Until now.
The Great Wain Robbery is a classic Heist movie, set in the Warhammer Old World, where you will play one of a band of no-good halfling criminal masterminds seeking one big score to set them up for life.
As part of this band of miniature mobsters, you will meticulously plan and prepare to execute a cunning and elaborate ruse, then set the heist running to see how it plays out.
For fans of capers, escapades, and horribly elaborate heists
Darker Malleus RPG run by Tom D
Winter falls on creation, bringing with it wicked cold and deepest dark. It is a season of desperation, when Evil whispers on the north wind and the righteous must be vigilant, lest the innocent fall under the Devil’s sway.
In such times HUNTERS swear sacred oaths to root out and destroy the forces of the ADVERSARY.
Be true and cautious, Hunter, for it may come to pass that the very Evil you persecute takes hold of your heart.
You are a group of new HUNTERS, you have been gathered by Bishop Ezekiel Gravehollow in the City of Blackspire for your first mission to seek out and destroy the minions of the Devil, defy their whispers and protect the innocent.
These are a couple of After Event Reports from the Winds of Chaos Forum
Turns out it was an actual wfrp convention in Sheffield.
A friend and I made the 2 hour 10 minute journey from the north east, and a couple of my old gaming buddies traveled from york, whilst John Foody made a weekend of it after getting the train from north London. there were sixteen of us all told, with four games each with three players.
In the morning I played a witch-hunter (and dog) in Tom D's Darker Malleus scenario. Very atmospheric despite a certain levity amongst the players.
In the afternoon I reprised 'The Heart of the Matter', which I wrote for, and ran at, Timcon ix. That must have been in 2012. It didn't run quite as well with three players as the six it was designed for, but it was more likely bad dice rolling that caused all the contenders to fail to become the new beastman champion, leading to their warband being disbanded.
Many thanks to Tom for organising the first Hallowing in the North Con in Sheffield. It was a great Con for WFRP and other Dark Fantasy games.
I reran my Lustria con scenario, The Three Trials of Neu Bergsburg, and this went well. The players were successful in saving the town, despite two random events that nearly ruined it for them, although only one character survived to the end. There was a lot more focus on cheese compared to when I ran the scenario at TobCon…
I took part in Tom’s game of Darker Malleus in the afternoon. This indie game has a nice rule mechanic and works well for witch-hunter types of game. I am tempted to use this for my next Tobcon scenario.
The only downside of the day was not being able to play in the other 2 games that were run on the day – both looked great.
I look forward to Harrowing 2.
