And so once again it was FerretCon and this time I thought I would try take a game which involved as little advance work as possible. Should I simply recycle some of my sci-fi or fantasy games again or should do something a little bit more different? This time I settled on the idea of something a little bit different. In the dim mists of time, not even this century but the previous one, I had a mix of Games Workshop 40K stuff and some stuff for new game called BloodBowl. Neither rule set particularly floated my boat. However, either Battle Action or 2000AD had a strip called Mean Arena where two teams competed to get a ball in a wrecked urban landscape. At that time I played a mashup of BloodBowl and 40K and it was good escapist fun.
So for FerretCon I decided do something similar. Lo and behold War Pig was born. A very very simple premise using my existing World War 2 15 mill figures and scenery. The conept centred on two squad size units each competing to get a ball into a goal on battlefield.
I had an additional inspiration which was actually to let's not have a ball. Basically I didn't have a 15mm ball! Instead I decided to go with something I did have in 15mm! Let's see people trying to score with a pig!
So War Pig was born. A very simple premise with two basic historical sections facing off. Armed mostly with the rifles and a squad support weapon. As well as shooting each other they have wrestle a pig into a trench/goal at the other end of the field.
I could have used any World War 2 environment but inthe end I opted for ar Far East style environment. A square pitch two foot by two foot; A trench/goal either end and a building the middle which was the kickoff.
I knowe there wasn't much in the way of War 2 fighting which involved actual pigs and trying to score goals. So I felt this should be in a sci-fi setting with soldiers replaced by clones. Any clones taken out during the course of play would be replaced so, on the halfway line, both sides had a building from which their replacements spawned. Both sides would always have 11 players in play.
We managed two games pitting the Japanese against the Anzacs. The morning game saw a score draw. In the afternoon game Boris won just on casualties rather than goals. It was all just a little bit different little bit of fun. From memory I think we had Phil and Boris the afternoon and Al and Kevin in the morning.
