Patient Instructions for Sputum Collection

1.Collect the sputum sample immediately after waking up.

   Before collecting the sample, do not brush your teeth, use mouthwash, eat, drink, or smoke.

2.Take a deep breath through your mouth and hold it for five seconds. 

   Slowly breathe out. Take another deep breath and then cough to bring up sputum from deep in your chest.

3.Open the collection tube and bring it close to your mouth. Spit the sputum into the tube, without getting any on the outside of the tube.

4.Tightly screw the cap onto the tube to prevent leakage.

5.Deliver the specimen to the Outpatient Blood Collection Center. If you cannot deliver the sample immediately, place the specimen in 

   the refrigerator as soon as possible. Do not store it in the freezer or leave it at room temperature.
