Patient Instructions for 24-hour Urine Collection
CAUTION: The container may contain a preservative, such as tablets, powder, or a strong acid solution. DO NOT remove the preservative. Keep the container upright to prevent spillage. Do not urinate directly into the container. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
1.DISCARD your first morning urine sample, make sure your bladder has been completely emptied. Record this time and date.This is
the START TIME. (e.g., if you urinate at 7:50 AM, record 7:50 AM).
2.Collect the rest of urine over the next 24 hours. For example, if you start at 7:50 AM, collect urine until 7:50 AM the next day.
3.Ensure you collect ALL urine during this period, even if the amount is very small.
4.Store the container in the dark between 2-4° C (e.g. refrigerator) during the collection procedure.
5.Collect your last urine sample exactly 24 hours after the START TIME. Even if you don't feel the urge to urinate, try to collect the
sample at this time. Empty your bladder completely. Record this time and date as the FINISH TIME.
6.Deliver the container to the Outpatient Blood Collection Center as soon as you are done with the collection. If you cannot deliver it
immediately, place the specimen in the refrigerator.
