It’s time to put your knowledge into practice. This activity lets you explore, experiment, and build confidence in a low-pressure space before you start guiding real visitors.
1. Create a free account
Go to gateway.nationalmall.org/en and click Sign Up (top right).
Use a email, choose a password, and confirm your account.
2. Open the FDR virtual tour
Use this link: gateway.nationalmall.org/en/virtual-tour/node93 to go straight to the FDR Memorial tour.
3. Learn the controls
Click the green dots to move between viewpoints (rooms and key features).
Use your mouse or arrow keys to look around each spot.
Pause at plaques and text panels to read captions.
4. Explore each room slowly
Start at the Prologue, then move through Room 1 → Room 2 → Room 3 → Room 4.
Spend 3–5 minutes in each virtual room the first few times so you notice the sequence and the big historical points.
5. Practice giving tours and talks
Think of one-sentence opener, two key facts, and a question for visitors for each room. For example, "We’re starting in the Prologue — this is where we learn how polio changed FDR’s life and shaped his leadership" "What stands out to you here?” or “Can you imagine living then?”
Rehearse accessibility prompts: practice asking “Would you like me to describe this for you?”
What to watch for during real tours
Keep it conversational, not scripted.
Pause for visitor reactions and questions.
Use one memorable fact or a short quote per room — don’t overload visitors.
If you’re unsure of an answer, offer to follow up or point to a reliable source (NPS materials, site staff).
