Planning & Designing your final project
Design Process:
1. Products:
Choose what product you would like to create, if you are uncertain on what you like to make, choose two or three products and research them online. Once you see more examples, you will be able to choose one item for your final project.
Here are some examples:
a) Small felt embroidery accessories such as: Cell phone cases, necklaces, pencil cases, glasses cases, etc.
b) Applying embroidery on an existing piece of clothing or accessories such as: t-shirts, jean pants, jean jackets, hat, backpacks, scarves, etc.
2. Colors:
Take inventory of all your available colors that you have received in your package in the following categories:
Felt Fabric
Embroidery Threads
Felt Applique
If you need a certain color that you don't have in your kit, come and see me, I will be able to give you the missing colors.
3. Size:
Use your tape measure to come up with the exact measurements of your final project. If you are making small accessories, you need to include the high, width and the depth of your piece. Make sure you add, “seam allowance” in your calculations. In general you can add ½ to 1 inch for your seam allowances “ SA”.
If you are going to create the embroidery on an existing piece, measure height and the width of the design you like to create. You could either sketch your design by hand on a piece of paper, or look for an image online. For example if you want to embroider an image of a bird, use the following keyboards on Google images “ birds line drawing” or if you are looking for an image of a cabin use “ Cabin line drawing” the word “line drawing” will help you to find cleaned out art that could be transferred to your clothing easily. Once you find the image you like, download it to your computer and size it to the actual size you want to use. If you are not sure how to resize your artwork, you could email me the image and I will resize it for you using adobe Photoshop and will print it for you.
4. Stitches:
Look at the embroidery sampler you made over the last two weeks and choose the stitches that are suitable for your design, if you are not sure what stitch works the best, let me know and we will pick your stitches together.
5. Sketching:
Once you gathered all of the above information, start sketching your final project, have at least two or three different ideas before starting your final project.
