Collaboration and project management are key skills needed to effectively work in any department within a company. At Affinity Wellness, the HR rest of the HR department and I need to always be collaborating to develop creative and unique solutions to our tasks, from designing the company calendar to working on the employee handbook.
I believe that throughout the 1st semester - and continuing into the 2nd semester - I have displayed a thorough understanding of these skills, especially through the following assignments: the company calendar and weekly fun Fridays.
As a start-up company, Affinity Wellness needed a good way to display upcoming events or any important dates to the employees. Our solution was to create a company calendar. I designed the calendar using a design software called Canva, and then our class facilitator, Mr. Hanson, printed it out on a large sheet of paper. Although fairly simple, the calendar included 42 empty boxes (plenty to fill out each date of the month) and the company logo behind. In this picture, the whole HR department is seen working on the calendar. Although I designed the calendar, as I said before, we always collaborate within the HR department, so everyone can help and give his or her input at all times.
Fun Friday is a once-weekly company-wide activity that everyone can participate in. The main goals of Fun Friday are to boost company morale and bring the company closer together. It also serves as an activity that employees look forward to each week. The HR department is responsible for creating an activity for each Friday. So far, some activities that we have done are musical chairs, a paper airplane contest, chair races, a paper pumpkin carving contest, hot seat, and guided yoga. The image on the right shows the whole class participating in a 5-minute guided yoga session.
Although I do believe that I have thoroughly demonstrated professional skills, there are still places where I can improve my skills. The employees of the HR department work well together for specific HR-specific tasks. However, for the company-wide tasks that the HR department is a part of, I believe that I can improve on working better with other departments. For example, the HR department and the Design departments are currently jointly working on the company newsletter. And, the HR department has been specifically tasked with creating the content. Although we can definitely complete that task, I think it would be useful to hear the opinions of other employees outside of the HR and Design department for their thoughts on our newsletter design and content. This way, the whole company can contribute and share ideas.
