Functional skills are a necessity in any workplace. In many businesses, employees must be able to understand general business dynamics and apply financial concepts in their regular work. In VEI, this can be in the form of conducting research and analysis. Overall, employees should be able to demonstrate strong quantitative ability, such as industry/function-specific skills.
As a start-up company, Affinity Wellness needed a basic foundation to facilitate effective growth in the future. One way the HR department contributed to the foundation of Affinity Wellness was by creating an employee handbook, a reference guide available to all Affinity employees.
The entire HR department conducted extensive research to create as realistic of an employee handbook as possible - that pertains to the inherent restrictions of a VEI company. We looked at past VEI companies' handbooks as well as real company handbooks to determine what was necessary to include in our own.
Although I do believe that I have thoroughly demonstrated functional skills, there are still places where I can improve my skills. The employees of the HR department work well together for specific HR-specific tasks. However, for the company-wide tasks that the HR department is a part of, I believe that I can improve on working better with other departments. For example, the HR department and the Design departments are currently jointly working on the company newsletter. And, the HR department has been specifically tasked with creating the content. Although we can definitely complete that task, I think it would be useful to hear the opinions of other employees outside of the HR and Design department for their thoughts on our newsletter design and content. This way, the whole company can contribute and share ideas.
