Vault-Tec Systems
Dear Lily Intong
For my website I chose the video game series Fallout. The reason I chose Fallout was because I was told to pick something that I was really passionate about. If I had chosen anything else I probably wouldn’t have gotten very fair, if I’m being honest. While working on my website, I had so many ideas come to mind. If I could I would spend an entire year just working on the website. Anyways, the purpose of my website was to introduce people to the discourse community of Fallout, and I have to say I think I did a pretty good job. Immediately when the assignment was given, I had the idea of what I wanted my website to look like. The purpose of the site overall was to give the impression that you are looking through an old computer monitor, the back really did help give that effect.
As for feedback, mostly everyone said that they really liked my website, and that everything was easy to follow. There wasn’t much feedback given in terms of fixing certain things on my website. I went through the pages and found a couple mistakes that I quickly fixed, overall I am really happy with how my website turned out. I think it makes people believe they are looking through some old computer terminal system, and that was my intended goal. There was some feedback given when talking about some of the games and to clarify them a bit more, I chose to not do that because I believe that the website is meant for talking about the Fallout series as a whole, and not a specific game. If I did choose to talk about the games and explain the plot in each of those games, I think I would have taken a bit away from the website. It would make it “too much” information.
There isn’t much I would change about my website, the one thing I would probably do is add more pages. But I realize that this is for people who are just starting to get into the community, even if I made the website for people who know everything about Fallout, they would find some minor technical detail that wouldn’t matter all that much. Other than that though, there is not a lot that I would change. I believe that my website “does the job”, when it comes to introducing people into a new discourse community. Maybe I would talk about some of the characters in the games, but I feel that those are meant for people who I know are really interested in Fallout.
When going through some of the pages of the website, I think I really do understand my writing process, as for research, however, it was hard to not get off of my own website. The only time I did do some research was probably for the genres of Fallout. Every time, I seemingly just went on typing away on my website. To some degree I feel as if I should have done some amount of research, but I probably would have ended up spending more time reading about stuff I already knew.
As for the SLO’s, I put myself in the mindset of what it would be like to first learn about Fallout. I think I succeeded in that, I didn’t put so much information to the point the reader would get bored of what I am talking about, but I also didn’t put so little information that the reader doesn’t understand what I am talking about and they don’t fly through the website not learning a thing.
