Welcome to October at The Downtown School! Please see below for important information and dates.
As always, please reach out with any questions that may come up.
We are here to SERVE,
Mr. Burnett
Please be checking the weather and sending your student with coats, hats and gloves if needed. We go outside for recess if the temperature is above 15 degrees including the wind chill. This time of year always brings ups and downs in temperature and we want to remain responsive, comfortable and safe.
Visitors to The Downtown School - All parents and community members will once again need to sign in electronically in our Lobby area when they are visiting classrooms. This is a much easier process than volunteering (see below). Check in with Deb VanWaardhuizen (our office manager) the next chance you get to make sure that you're in the system. All visitors to our building should be wearing a visitors badge with their picture on it when they are present in our building. Thanks in advance!
Volunteers are a welcome addition to our school family. To be a volunteer anywhere in the district involves completing an online application and receiving approval prior to participating in an activity for the school. A volunteer would be anyone assisting with students other than your own in any capacity.
The district is experiencing a delay in getting approvals which is occurring at the agency that completes our background checks. If you would like to volunteer for any school activity, please complete an on-line application soon, it may take 8-10 days for processing. An email will be sent by the district when the background check is completed.
Here are the steps to access the application – it is important to review how to complete the application as it also looks like an employment application which causes confusion.

At the ‘Online Volunteer Application’ page, please read the information before accessing the Online Application and then proceed.
Please Note: If you were a volunteer in the past, you will need to complete another application. If you applied since September 2021, you do not need to do another application for 5 years.

Everyone deserves to enjoy a Thanksgiving with family and friends. Last year, At least 53 million people visited a food bank or food pantry. We have a wonderful opportunity to be able to serve those that need a little extra help. Please consider signing up for an item or two if you are able- a little goes a long way. All recipients will be held confidential and delivered by Community School Coordinator, Mariah Button. Thank you for your service. Additional questions or comments can be sent to mariah.button@dmschools.org
