Welcome to December at The Downtown School. You'll find some new information and several important dates below.
As always, please reach out with any questions that may come up.
We are here to SERVE,
Mr. Burnett
The 5th graders at DTS have been learning about human rights and how they can be threatened, and we have decided to take action in our community! A few weeks ago, we had a worker from the IHYC (Iowa Homeless Youth Center) come and share some important things that they think would help them get through this winter season. We soon concluded that their most important needs were personal hygiene and winter wear items.
So, from the 12th to the 16th, we will be hosting a “Body Care and Winter Wear” Drive! We are asking for the following donations: scarves, gloves or mittens, hats, hand or foot warmers, shampoo/conditioner, lotion, soap, and other hair products such as hair spray, gel, or mousse. You can also donate used hats, gloves or mittens, but we encourage you to donate clean and gently used things.
Your child can bring their donations to school, and we will collect them during the day. The class with the most items donated wins a “SNOW DAY PARTY”! And if our school collects 1,111 items, Mr. Burnett said that we can make the day before winter break “WACKY WEDNESDAY”!
A message from the PTA: If you are wondering how to support DTS during this season, please consider giving to the PTA's Adopt-A-Teacher Fund, which can be found on the PTA webpage. The PTA distributes funds collected through Adopt-A-Teacher Fund evenly to all DTS teachers for use in buying classroom materials and supplies that teachers might otherwise purchase with their money.
Please note that Adopt-A-Teacher Fund donations cannot be earmarked for a specific teacher or classroom. However families making an Adopt-A-Teacher donation can leave a note for a specific teacher, which the PTA will transmit. Notes included with donations made by 12/16 will be delivered before the winter break this year.
This is also an excellent replacement to any gifts that you may be thinking of providing your Teacher as we are not legally allowed to accept gifts over $4.00 in value. :-)
You can donate anytime at the link below.
Thanks for your support!
Every other year, The Downtown School puts on an Auction for various products/services that our community has a connection to. This is by far our largest fundraiser! Our auction will be on April 20th at Ricochet in downtown Des Moines. In the meantime, we would LOVE if you could help us begin compiling the list of possible items/services to be auctioned off. Be thinking of a special experience you could provide another family, any connections to businesses that might want to donate something, or any other service or item that you think could bring in to generate some auction action! Please email the following PTA volunteers for ideas and donations towards the cause!
Those of you wanting to donate to the cause, but not participate can use the link below to donate.
