Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year at The Downtown School! You are in the right place. We pledge to love, care for, and help your student achieve as much as they can this year!
See below for important information and dates. Supply lists. calendar and DTS Glossary of terms can be accessed from the link above this page.
As always, please reach out with any questions that may come up.
We are here to SERVE,

Back to School Routines
Now is the time to begin transitioning your student to be ready for school! As I always say, "Start with the easy stuff."
Healthy food!
Consistent sleep schedule.
Morning routine.
Optimism! Every aspect of a new year comes with excitement. Please help us getting everyone pumped up.
Time to shake off those summer cobwebs and prepare for a great school year. :-)
If you're interested in joining the PTA, the PTA dues are $10/family, and student activity fee ($15/student) support learning and enrichment activities throughout the year. These funds spare DTS families the typical school fundraising efforts like magazine, wrapping paper and cookie dough sales!
No need to be an official member to join us for the meetings!
Also, STAY TUNED for more information on some after school clubs we're hoping to begin in September!
PTA also created a community calendar (below) to help streamline our community events!
Please complete the following form before selecting the link to complete your payment via PayPal:
Wednesday, August 17th
4-6 PM
All incoming 5 year olds are welcome to join us for an afternoon of acclimation and FUN! All students will have the opportunity to meet our 5-6 year old teachers, get a tour of the school, and begin to visualize what their school day will look like. Classroom assignments will not be finalized for our incoming 5 year olds until Monday, August, 29th. This will give us 3 full days of students getting to know each other and acclimating themselves to each of our spaces and teachers. (Note - This is slightly different than the rest of our District).
Visitors to The Downtown School - All parents and community members will once again need to sign in electronically in our Lobby area when they are visiting classrooms. This is a much easier process than volunteering (see below). Check in with Deb VanWaardhuizen (our office manager) the next chance you get to make sure that you're in the system. All visitors to our building should be wearing a visitors badge with their picture on it when they are present in our building. Thanks in advance!
Volunteers are a welcome addition to our school family. To be a volunteer anywhere in the district involves completing an online application and receiving approval prior to participating in an activity for the school.
The district is experiencing a delay in getting approvals which is occurring at the agency that completes our background checks. If you would like to volunteer for any school activity, please complete an on-line application soon, it may take 8-10 days for processing. An email will be sent by the district when the background check is completed.
Here are the steps to access the application – it is important to review how to complete the application as it also looks like an employment application which causes confusion.
DMPS Volunteer Application Link
At the ‘Online Volunteer Application’ page, please read the information before accessing the Online Application and then proceed.
Please Note: If you were a volunteer in the past, you will need to complete another application. If you applied since September 2021, you do not need to do another application for 5 years.
Our Community Schools Coordinator, Mariah Button, is collecting information to help us serve you better. Please take a few minutes to help us collect information at the link below.

Better late than never! We faced several logistical issues in getting this out at the end of last year but we didn't want to miss the memories of last school year. :-)
You can order yearbooks at the link below for the 2021-2022 school year. The official flyer is attached.
For the family's that may have moved or beginning middle school, we'll figure out a way to get them to you!

If your child has an allergy or special diet, make sure to contact our school nurse at amy.dace@dmschools.org
Individual milks or additional portions will need to be ordered in the morning and lunch accounts will still be setup to be able to pay for those extras. More information on accounts and menus can be found at the link below

September 13th
Water Works Park - Back Loop
5:00 - 7:00 PM
Please join us for the Back to School Bonfire and bring the whole family! We will celebrate the beginning of another great year at DTS with hot dogs and S'mores for the kids. There is plenty of space to bring a few lawn chairs or a picnic blanket and enjoy a nice evening in the park. Hope to see you there!
Student Drop-off
All Students may be dropped off starting at 7:15. Breakfast will be served and students can travel to their classroom at 7:30 AM. We encourage all students to be dropped off as close to 7:15-7:30 as possible, because that is when they will be able to travel straight to their classroom.
Roundabout in front of our main entrance (North side) No parent parking until after 8:00 AM.
Parents also have the option, with a Downtown School parking tag, to park along the south side of Grand Ave where marked and walk their students across the street. (see diagram below). Parking tags can be picked up in our main office.
Staff will be present at main entrance and our roundabout to ensure safety and convenience.
Have the child that is being dropped off sitting on the right side of the vehicle so they can easily get out. For safety (both drop-off and dismissal) it’s better for students to be sitting on the right as we do not want them walking into the line of traffic to get in on the other side of the car.
Pick Up - Dismissal
5/6, 7's, and older siblings will be picked up in the front of our building as cars approach the front of the line.
8'9's and 10's will be picked up behind our building (South Side)
