SCHOOL PROFILE
The University of Northern Philippines Laboratory School is a laboratory school established as part of the university’s commitment to supporting teacher education and improving the quality of basic education. The school is located in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur, and operates under the supervision of the University of Northern Philippines.
The Laboratory School serves as a training and practice environment for pre-service teachers. It provides opportunities for student teachers to apply educational theories, teaching strategies, and classroom management skills in real classroom situations. Because of this role, the school frequently hosts teaching practicum, classroom observations, and educational activities related to teacher training.
The school offers a complete basic education program, starting from Kindergarten up to Senior High School. Through these levels, the school aims to support students’ academic growth while also developing their character and overall personal development.
At the secondary level, the junior high school program includes Grade 7, Grade 8, and Grade 9, while the senior high school program continues with higher grade levels. The learning environment encourages students to participate actively in classroom activities and develop important academic and social skills.
As a laboratory school, the University of Northern Philippines Laboratory School plays an important role in bridging theory and practice in teacher education. By providing real teaching and learning experiences, the school contributes to the development of future educators who are competent, responsible, and professionally prepared.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT SYSTEM
The academic support system at the University of Northern Philippines Laboratory School plays an important role in supporting effective teaching and learning activities. The school provides several facilities and resources that help create a comfortable and engaging learning environment for students.
During my teaching practicum, I was supported by a mentor teacher who guided me throughout the teaching process. My mentor provided helpful suggestions, feedback, and direction that helped me improve my teaching strategies and classroom management. The presence of experienced teachers and school staff is an important part of the academic support system, especially for pre-service teachers who are conducting their teaching practice.
In terms of classroom facilities, the classrooms are equipped with various learning supports. Each classroom has a television screen that teachers commonly use to display learning materials and presentations. Sometimes, projectors are also used to support visual learning activities. In addition, whiteboards are available in every classroom to assist teachers in explaining lesson content clearly.
The classrooms are also designed to support students’ comfort during the learning process. They are equipped with air conditioning, and each classroom has its own restroom facility, which provides convenience for students during school hours.
Overall, these facilities and academic supports contribute to a positive learning environment and help both teachers and students engage more effectively in classroom activities.
TEACHING SYSTEM
The teaching system at the University of Northern Philippines Laboratory School is structured and student-centered, aiming to encourage active participation and meaningful learning in the classroom.
Based on my classroom observations and teaching experience, the learning process usually begins with a greeting from the teacher, followed by a review of the previous lesson. This review helps students recall what they have learned and prepares them for the new topic. After that, teachers often provide a short motivational activity to engage students and increase their interest in the lesson.
The teacher then presents the learning objectives and continues with the explanation of the lesson. During this stage, teachers encourage students to participate by asking questions and inviting them to share their ideas. Many students show a high level of participation and often take the initiative to answer questions voluntarily.
After the explanation, the teacher briefly reviews the key points of the lesson before moving on to learning activities. These activities may include group discussions, individual tasks, or interactive classroom exercises, which allow students to apply what they have learned. At the end of the lesson, teachers usually assign homework to reinforce the students’ understanding of the topic.
In terms of language use, English is used as the main medium of instruction in the classroom, especially for academic subjects. The Filipino language is mainly used in the Filipino subject, while English remains the primary language for communication in most classroom activities.
CURRICULUM
The University of Northern Philippines Laboratory School implements the MATATAG Curriculum for students from Kindergarten to Grade 8, while Grades 9 to 12 follow the K-12 Curriculum (Philippines) implemented by the Department of Education (Philippines).
The MATATAG Curriculum is a recently introduced educational framework in the Philippines that aims to strengthen the quality of basic education. This curriculum emphasizes the development of essential skills such as literacy, numeracy, and 21st-century competencies. The acronym MATATAG represents important educational values: Makabansa (patriotic), Makatao (people-centered), Mahusay (competent), and Matatag (resilient). Through this framework, students are encouraged not only to develop academic knowledge but also strong character and social responsibility.
For higher grade levels, the K-12 Curriculum is implemented as part of the Philippine basic education system, which includes Kindergarten up to Grade 12. This system is designed to gradually develop students’ knowledge and skills, preparing them for higher education, future careers, and lifelong learning.
During classroom instruction, teachers clearly present the learning objectives at the beginning of each lesson, usually through PowerPoint presentations. In addition, students often use printed learning modules and teaching materials prepared by the teachers to support their understanding of the lesson.
Overall, the curriculum implemented at the UNP Laboratory School supports both academic development and character formation, helping students develop the knowledge and skills needed for their future education and personal growth.
