Because technology is dynamic, our understanding of the most effective and responsive means to connect with students must be as dynamic. Ongoing professional development, then, is a central component to effective online teaching.
I am a strong believer of lifelong learning. But when I started my journey in late 2018, I did not have a clear understanding on how to relate to my online students as something more than a subject matter expert, how to build instructor presence and social presence rather than just being a facilitator, and how to convey empathy and awareness in my online classes. I was aware of some tools but was not sure how to use them effectively. Since then, I came a long way - I have grown professionally and transformed myself tremendously.
I appreciate more the value of culturally responsive teaching, instructor presence and social presence, empathy, and universal design for learning. Last year, I have completed online instruction training at my college. This year I have completed San Jose State University Summer Online Teaching Certificate Program.I am collaborating and continuing to learn from my peers and students. I have incorporated instructor presence & social presence, empathy, awareness, equity, stronger interpersonal connections in my online classes. My courses are more dynamic and humane than before which I never thought was possible.
I believe that there is always room for improvement in every work I do. I am confident that I will continue to grow in the upcoming years and provide better support and guidance to my students and build a better collaborative learning community for my students. To share my knowledge that I have learned from @ONE classes with my colleagues, last year, I presented a workshop at the Professional Development Day of my college. I will continue to do so. I will also continue to take @ONE courses and explore Online Education Initiative (OEI) website,, and attend online teaching conferences and webinars to learn new things and thereby become a better instructor than I am.
Please see below some of the examples.
The following courses have played an enormous role in my professional development:
Humanizing Online Teaching and Learning
Equity and Culturally Responsive Teaching
Digital Citizenship
Dynamic Online Teaching
I have learned strategies and tools from these courses to apply to my online classes and make them better. I also have built empathy for my students as I went through the same experience of being an online student.
I have attended 2019 Can Innovate Online Conference. Among other things, I have learned how to embed quizzes in video, how to use flashcards for self assessment, how to apply Peralta Rubric to promote connection and belonging, how to use group discussion for increasing interaction & engagement, and how to integrate compassion into teaching.
This Summer I have completed San Jose State University online teaching certification.
I am continuing to learn by taking the following self-paced courses from @ONE:
