I'am Fahmida Fakhruddin. I have started my journey as a community college instructor at Evergreen Valley College, San Jose, CA in 2017. I completely understand the challenges students face when enrolled into a college with a diverse background. My goal is to help students overcome the challenges they face, and to provide the individual support necessary to succeed. I want to support students in developing critical thinking skills. Hence, helping them to become independent learners who discover cognitive strategies to get “unstuck” and find their way out of the achievement gap.
I graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Applied Economics from Clemson University, South Carolina. I have worked at Clemson University and Stanford University as a Health Economics Researcher.
My underlying philosophy of teaching is to stimulate student interest in economics. I am fortunate enough to be teaching. To fully stimulate interest, students must be well versed in the tools required for in-depth economic reasoning. Because of this, I work with students to develop the analytical tools and critical thinking skills necessary to be able to understand real-world situations from an economic perspective. With this in place, I can stimulate both interests as well as critical thinking as it relates to the field of economics.
My hope is that the passion I have for the subject matter is visible to students so that they feel comfortable visiting me when lectures are complete, to discuss any questions they have over topics we cover in class. If I can make this connection, make economics, and be easily understood, for a student that before was unsure of the topic, I have satisfied the core aspect of my philosophy. If this opportunity is missed, then I feel I have not done my job. I pride myself on making connections with every student in my class so that if questions arise during the semester, they feel fully comfortable asking.
