Humanizing online teaching and learning course taught me that both instructor's personal presence and social presence are the key to build a community of learning. Rather than being a facilitator we need to connect with students as a real person. Instructor needs to show empathy as well as be aware of his/her students. Videos are the great tool to achieve that.
I was worried about how to present myself in an online course.I wanted to use videos to show my students that I care for them and I am here to help and support them to make learning fun and rewarding. I was camera shy- I was afraid to make my own videos. I also had no idea how to edit my videos and add captions.
I have overcome my fear of making my own videos. Students can see the real me with my fault and shortcomings and be a part of the learning community. I try to cultivate my presence in my courses as follows:
Use welcome video to introduce myself at the beginning of the semester.
Post introductory videos on specific topics at the beginning of each module.
Use videos in course announcements.
Provide regular effective feedback for assignments using audio/video.
Connect with students on social media.
Use personalized messages to check on students regularly.
The value of humanizing is tremendous in building a learning community and promoting active learning. I try to become more creative in creating my individual and social presence. I believe this will definitely improve students engagement and success rates.
Please see below some examples.
You can find the welcome video from my homepage to introduce myself and let students know about myself at the beginning of the semester.
This is 2:50 minutes video that provides a brief understanding of a specific concept called Opportunity Cost which is a building block in economics. Understanding this concept would help students to complete module one's assignments .
To make a great first impression, I use this syllabus to convey my teaching philosophy and information about my expectations, inform students of available student support services, both online and on-campus, and provide tips for studying and exam preparation.
