In this project, we examine the role social media plays in modern society and in the lives of students.
After completing the social media addiction survey, I got results telling me that I have a healthy relationship with social media. I was not at all surprised with these results because I have made it an emphasis in my life to cut out the use of social media. It has never been a factor in the mood it puts me in, but it is very distracting, especially when I have goals that I'm trying to achieve.
The most interesting statistic I discovered that was done at the Pew Research Center was the statistic on the main reason why people think social media has a negative effect on what's going on in the country. The study reveals that every 3/10 (28%) respondents believe it is because it is used to spread false information, or "fake news." This intrigued me because honestly, I thought the percentage would be higher for that reason because it happens so often; that is another reason why I refrain from the use of socials.
In my opinion, social media impacts women and adolescent girls with how they view themselves internally because it has now created an unrealistic beauty and life standard. With an example such as the Kardashians, they feel the altering of physical and social appearance is required to receive attention from males. On the other hand, males undergo a scenario similar to this as they see popular men like Drake and Lil Baby, two of the most famous artists, post events and objects that are reflections of their economic status which causes males to implicitly, or in some cases evidently, attempt to emulate their lifestyle. Lastly, it is clear that social media has also been the reason why a lot of young people have lost their lives to suicide because of the excessive cyberbullying that goes on within the platforms.
Post completion of this module, I have learned that not as many people in the world are addicted to social media as I thought because the survey website says that only 5-10% of users are addicted. Also, well over half the adults in this nation believe social media has a negative impact on the country's motives and systems.
