Ever since I was a college student I wanted to participate in an egg hunt. Sadly, in all my college years there was never such an activity offered. As a librarian, I decided to make it happen for the students! I thought it would be a great idea for them to relax between the midterms and to welcome spring with this activity. With the help of the library team and a small out of pocket budget I made it happen.
There is a green space behind the library building that is never used despite having a big potential, so I decided to use it since it was the perfect place to do the Egg Hunt. I made a map to share in the many bulletin boards of the college and on Instagram to let the students know the location of the event.
The map with the location.
There would be 3 tables available besides the Egg Hunt: one with books of the collection having to do with spring for a small library PopUp, one with floral tea options and lemonade and the other table would have free seeds for the students to take in the spirit of the spring theme.
We filled the eggs with fun silly stickers and I hid 3 golden eggs that would have special stickers inside and whoever got one of them would win a prize. Whoever had the most eggs would also win. I also made a sign to place on the spot where the Egg Hunt would be done so the would know with precision where it would happen.
I was a little scared of people not showing up, but before we were even finished hiding the eggs the students began to arrive in groups! Everyone was very excited and we even had to do a second round! One student even said "This is the type of activity the college should do more of, not the usual boring stuff", which I took as a huge compliment from the words of the current generation. Another student told me she rode on the train just to come to the activity despite not even having classes that day. It was a huge success and everyone had a lot of fun.
This was a great way to expose ourselves to the students that did not know about our existence by putting ourselves out there instead of staying inside the library building waiting for them to discover us.
