On May 8, 2025 the Arts and Music Collection at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus held the 2nd Free Comic Book Day. As the Assistant Librarian of the Collection I had a big role in the development and promo of the event.
My major role in this event was utilizing my creative and Graphic Design background to promote the event on Instagram and the university by creating the art and marketing campaign of the event.
To reveal the upcoming event I came up with the idea of creating anticipation with a fun reveal trailer that the students would love and feel interested in watching. I wrote, directed, recorded and edited the trailer that ended up becoming a short film. Here it is :
We had the plan of self-publishing and giving away a free zine comic during the event. This comic would feature local artists to give the activity a local flavor and was called La Gallinera (the chicken coup). The name is due to the college mascot being a rooster and wanting to give it a twist by using the female equivalent: chicken. I came up with the idea of making a cover reveal trailer so the public would know about it. Since the comic had a chicken theme, I suggested we made a video taking advantage of it. Like the previous video, I directed, edited and recorded. Here is the result:
Along these videos, I made promos for sharing online, email and on printed posters as well as promo for the activities that would be offered. Here are samples:
The activity was a huge success. More than 300 people came. We had a bazaar for local artists to sell their work, workshops, an Asian Game Zone and a Just Dance tournament. I dressed up as a hero cosplay to participate in the spirit of the event, helped distribute the comics and recorded footage of the day. It required a lot of teamwork and hard work to make this event happen, but seeing everyone having fun made it worth it. I made a reel for Instagram with all the footage I recorded and uploaded it as a summary of the event. Here it is:
Holding a Free Comic Book Day at the library is an incredible way to have the public learn about the space and to help local artists become known to the public. It is all about collaboration and teamwork, like an Art Library Avengers Team.
