It is the student's responsibility to add, drop, or withdraw from classes before the deadlines stated in the class schedule. After the drop deadline, it is up to the instructor’s discretion to drop a student after the deadline. Petitions to add, drop, or withdraw after the deadline will not be approved without proof of circumstances beyond the student's control, which made him/her unable to meet the deadline. Lack of money to pay fees is not considered an extenuating circumstance. Students anticipating difficulty in paying fees before the add deadline should check with the Financial Aid Office about sources of funds or other alternatives for which they may be eligible.
Online classes: If you fail to log on to Canvas for a whole week, therefore missing an entire module, you may be dropped from the course. Please be sure to communicate with me if you fall behind so you don’t get dropped unintentionally.
If you decide to withdraw from this course, you are reminded to do so before the withdrawal deadline. If you fail to withdraw by that date and you stop coming to class, a final grade must be assigned to you.
STATEMENT OF RETENTION: Students, please discuss your plans to withdraw from class with me beforehand. I want you to be successful in this course! I may be able to provide you with other options to allow you to continue in class, but I cannot support you unless you speak with me about your concerns.
We are all juggling a lot during the semester so I understand if you fall a few days behind in your coursework and would like to be flexible with you. However, I do know that students who fall far behind find it very difficult to catch up on their missing coursework, current coursework, and other courses.
If you fall more than three weeks behind in your coursework, you may be dropped from the class due to inactivity. It is better for you to withdraw from a course that you fall too far behind in than to receive a failing grade. I will help support you in getting caught up if you contact me about making a plan but I do reserve the right to drop you due to falling severely behind in your coursework.
Since we are not meeting in person or on Zoom, attendance will be assessed based on how often learners are logging into Canvas and whether students are completing the modules on time. If a student falls behind on their modules, or fails to log in to Canvas each week, that will impact their attendance and final grade in the class.
If students fall behind on the Canvas coursework to the point the instructor feels they won’t be able to keep up, that student may be dropped from the course.
Academic Integrity
Honesty and integrity are integral components of the academic process. Students are expected to be honest and ethical at all times in their pursuit of academic goals. Any student found in violation of this policy will receive at least one of the following: an incomplete for that assignment, a reduction of one letter grade for the course, or an “F” in the course. In addition, students will receive an “incomplete” on any assignment if he or she presents the words, ideas, or work of someone else as their own, or if he or she has work heavily rewritten by someone else and turns it in as his or her own.
Active participation is a requirement of this course. Just as if we were in person, you are expected to participate with the instructor and your peers throughout each class session. For a fully web class like ours, participation will be expected on discussion boards within our modules. I encourage writers to respond to multiple peers and really engage with each other on the discussion boards, not just complete them to get them over with.
Respect
Our classroom environment should be welcoming to everyone. Therefore, it is important that all discussions, along with all writing produced in this class, is conducted with the utmost respect for all participants. For this reason, rude and unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated. In addition, any writing that is hateful toward a person or group of people will not be accepted. To help ensure everyone feels safe to share their ideas in this class, please treat each conversation with respect and consideration. If you are unable to accept the responsibility of being respectful to your classmates and me, then this class is not the place for you and you may be dropped from the course.
All work must be turned in on time through Canvas. Late work will impact your grade per the grading contract. If there is an extenuating circumstance, please talk to me.
Students will have one month after the due date to submit late work. Any work submitted one month past the due date will not be accepted.
You are allowed to revise your work several times to earn a complete on that assignment. Once you receive the first round of feedback (the initial time your project is marked incomplete), you have one month to complete your revisions for a complete. If you need to revise it three times in that month, that's ok! However, you only have one month from the day I provide feedback to complete your revisions. If you do not revise and resubmit within the one month, your assignment will be left incomplete for the course, likely causing you to fail the course. If there is some extenuating circumstance causing you to prolonge your revisions, please talk to me.
I require that you format all papers in MLA format unless told otherwise (you can visit: owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/ to help you learn MLA formatting). Please use 12-point, Times New Roman font, and double space your text.
