a design company that practices human centred design
Founded by David Kelley, who also founded Stanford University’s Hasso Plattner Institute of Design, IDEO is a design company that uses human-centered design to create products, services, and experiences that improve the lives of people.
As early leaders in the practice of design thinking, IDEO creates positive impact through design by applying our creative mindsets and skills to design products, services, environments, and digital experiences, and by teaching others to do the same. IDEO also partners with organizations to pioneer new ways of working, as well as build tools that help millions learn and practice human-centered design.
Human centered design is about getting to understand the people we are designing for and design from their perspective. From there, designers build, test, and iterate until they get it right. It sits at the intersection between empathy and creativity.
Anyone can practice human centered design and people benefit as it gets us solutions that are adapted and embraced. The problems we face are immense, systemic, and complex, but we believe that a design-led approach, the right partnerships, and sustained engagement with a particular problem can create transformative change.
OpenIDEO is a collaborative platform for the design process. It is now a public tool used to virtually drive the creative process to solve social problems, allowing for people of different expertise and backgrounds to collaborate. OpenIDEO often have challenges that invite designers from across the world to take part in various projects to solve these problems.
In the pages below, we will dive into and explore the human centered design more in depth, understanding and explaining the design thinking process step by step in a way that everyone can understand and learn to practice on their own.
