Fake and misleading claims about science are all over the internet. Some are just dumb like the flat earth claims while others like anti-vaccination claims are part of larger efforts to undermine people's faith in science and scientists. Professor Dave (Professor Dave Explains on YouTube) has been a leading voice in challenging false claims and showing how these do not stand up to scrutiny. ExplanaJam is teaming up with Prof. Dave to offer a NEW prize for the best science explanations that debunk claims from popular media.
To be eligible for the Debunking Prize you need to indicate where the claim was made (what platform or channel) and explain why the claim is incorrect.
This year we have added a prize for debunking science misinformation. Social media is awash with scientific claims, some valid and some are bogus. Here are some examples (these are all false!):
Of course there are still the classics like vaccines are dangerous and climate change is a hoax and even the earth is flat. Step 1 is to identify the claim. What are they saying is happening? Then research the phenomena and the evidence to see what is really going on. And check out the motivations: why would they say this? Create a 3 minute video explaining the claim and what the science says.
Any video that utilizes stop motion animation to explain a phenomena is eligible for a special prize:
