Director, Experiential Learning Commons
Brenda Guzic has been with the university since 2006. She earned her nursing degree from Mount Aloysius College and obtained a Bachelor of Science in Social Work, Master of Art in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations and a Master of Health Science from Saint Francis University. She holds a Medical Simulation Development Certification from the University of Pittsburgh Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation Education and Research and the University of Miami Gordon Center and is a professionally Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) through The Society for Simulation in Healthcare. The CHSE is the internationally recognized professional certification for individuals involved with simulation-based learning. The certification indicates that the individual has expertise in the area of healthcare simulation education for undergraduates, graduates, allied health, and healthcare practitioners. Prior to this position, she served as the Assistant Director for Telehealth at Saint Francis University’s Center of Excellence for Remote and Medically Under-Served Areas (CERMUSA). In this capacities she collaborated in developing, coordinating and administering the telehealth and distance learning aspects of the CERMUSA project. She proactively participated in identifying partners, networking activities, technology selection, and budgetary management of the project. Brenda has acted as principle investigator on a number of telehealth research projects administered by the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command's Telemedicine and Advanced Technology Research Center, Fort Detrick, Maryland. Her research has been published in professional journals, and she has presented at local, national and international conferences on the topics of simulation learning, telemedicine methodology, and distance learning. She has also participated as a panel member as a subject matter expert in simulation. Prior to her service at SFU she practiced in the clinical setting as a Disease Management Coordinator specializing in diabetes, congestive heart failure and asthma management; a medical case manager and social worker coordinating and managing the delivery of care and services to clients; and as Department Manager of an Ambulatory Surgery Diagnostic Unit where she was responsible for the administrative, clinical and technical services of the department. In her current role, Brenda is responsible for creating a shared multi-year programmatic vision in coordination with key stakeholders and for planning, designing, and implementing simulation-based activities. Primary responsibilities include management of the Experiential Learning Commons, coordination of simulation activities across programs and communities, and future planning, marketing and guiding use of the Experiential Learning Commons for training and research.Simulation Technician, Experiential Learning Commons
Dave Wolfe is the Simulation Technician in the Saint Francis University Experiential Learning Commons. In this capacity he provides technical support for all simulation operations, including preparation, maintenance and repair of computerized manikins, task trainers and related multimedia peripherals. In addition he serves as simulator operator by programming, testing and running scenarios assuring that the facility and equipment are appropriately set up for teaching sessions. He also provides technical assistance, support and training to faculty, instructors and staff in the use of simulation equipment and works closely with the Director in the evaluation and selection of simulation related equipment, supplies and materials. Dave possesses an Associate’s Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology from Pittsburgh Technical Institute, is a Certified Electronic Technician with a concentration in Wireless Communications, and holds a FCC General Radio/Telephone Operator’s License. For the past five years, he also worked as a multimedia coordinator for the University’s Marketing and Communications Department where he provided professional photography and video production services. Prior to his roles as Simulation Technician and Multimedia Coordinator, Dave served as a Wireless Communications Specialist for the Center of Excellence for Remote and Medically Under-Served Areas (CERMUSA). In this capacity he was responsible for the management of all research and engineering associated with wireless communications networks related to the organization’s research projects.Dave brings a great deal of experience to the position and he merges his technical skills with the simulation field in creating realistic environments to provide students with the opportunity to practice the skills they will need later in their careers. He continues to expand his knowledge and is currently studying to obtain the Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) certification.
