Do all female turtles lay eggs?
Much like chickens, female turtles can lay eggs without a male turlte being present to fertilize them.
Many wild turtles lay eggs in the spring in response to temperature and light cycle changes.
However in captivity, captive turtles can lay eggs at any given time.
Some turtles may lay after sexual maturity. Others may not lay for many years.
What can I expect?
If your turtle is gravid you may see 1 or more of the following signs.
Restlessness
Attempting to escape or pacing
Digging with her hind legs
Excessive basking
Poor appetite
How can I prepare?
Get a dark tote
Fill it with organic top soil
Spray to moisten
Increase temp using a heat lamp to be degrees F. No CHE nor colored bulbs.
Put it in a low traffic area
Put her in, let her nest for a few hours per day
Provide her with extra calcium, protein and potassium
Outdoor time is best but only if weather permits.
If your turtle has been showing signs for 10 days without laying, and you see straining, discharge or signs of illness: take her to the vet for x-rays. She may need an oxytocin injection to induce her laying.
