Where do we go from here? While the survey results didn’t quite mirror the data, they will still serve as an important conversation starter on making the Pride Center more equitable and accessible for all. Some ways we can do that include:
• Increasing the size of the Pride Center, and making it a space people actually want to use
• Carefully assessing the location, making sure it’s in an area that feels private, but also central enough to prohibit vandals
• Focus on inclusivity by making sure the design and décor represent multiple identities, such as the trans and nonbinary flags
• Thoughtfully use the rainbow flag, so those that don’t identify as white feel welcome
• Consider changing the name overall since "Pride” is often associated with white gay men
It’s important that you have a say in this transformation as well! The college has set aside this space for us, and it’s important that it fulfills our needs and acts as a refuge for the queer community.
Great news! Prior to the completion of this project, we applied, and were approved, for a mini grant! Stay tuned for more information in the coming months! Dr. John Hudson, Vice President of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, will be the point of contact for allocating funding, and managing the decision process.
