Screening Assessment
Pupils first complete a short screening to help identify those who may benefit most from the programme. To help select pupils for the trial, we use ReadingScreen, a quick, web-based tool developed by Oxford University to measure word and non-word reading in under 10 minutes.
ReadingScreen consists of two short tests:
Test 1: Pupils read aloud a series of up to 80 words of increasing complexity.
Test 2: Pupils read aloud up to 30 made-up non-words (e.g., plaront).
The adult administering the test marks each response as correct or incorrect, and the test stops if a pupil gets eight items in a row incorrect. Educators receive full training and support from our team to confidently deliver these assessments.

What happens next: Literacy Assessments
Those selected will then take part in a series of short, online assessments at three time points to help us track their language and literacy progress throughout the project.
Time 1 (Pre-intervention): All participating pupils (both groups) complete assessments before any RILL lessons begin.
Time 2 (Post-intervention for Group 1): After Group 1 completes the RILL lessons, all pupils complete the assessments again. This allows us to compare the progress of Group 1 (who completed RILL) with Group 2 (who continued with their usual lessons).
Time 3 (Follow-up and post-intervention for Group 2): All pupils complete the assessments a final time. This allows us to measure long-term outcomes for Group 1 and to see the effect of the RILL programme on Group 2 after they have completed the lessons.
The sessions will take approximately 45 minutes.
The assessments we use to measure the pupils literacy skills are standardised literacy tests adapted for online administration including:
Pre- and Post- Programme Assessments:
Phonemic awareness (pre-programme only)
Word reading accuracy
Vocabulary knowledge
Reading comprehension
Spelling accuracy
Assessment Setup: What Schools Need
Assessments will be available online and will be supervised by the school's appointed RILL teacher and a member of the RILL team. The RILL team will provide devices to administer assessments (tablet and headphones); however, we do we ask schools to provide:
An internet connection capable of streaming videos.
The teacher has access to a desktop or laptop computer with Windows 10 or a more recent version.
Microsoft 365 downloaded to the computer.
A timetable for all pupils to be assessed during the same week.
A suitable, quiet room.
Up to 4 pupils can be tested at a time. However, there must be sufficient distance between participants to avoid audio contamination (i.e., microphones do not record background noise). The number of pupils assessed and the time taken is therefore dependent on the size of room / number of rooms the school can provide.
Please note that these assessments are to be used ONLY for the purposes of the study and are NOT to be used as diagnostic tools to assess literacy difficulties.
