Learn how we are evaluating the RILL English programme in schools, including our structured process and timelines. For details on the specific assessments we use, see our Assessment Activities page.
We are using a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate how well the RILL programme supports pupil’s reading and writing development. An RCT is a method where pupils are randomly placed into two groups:
One group will complete the RILL programme straight away.
The other group will complete the programme later.
Both groups will complete short activities to measure their reading and writing skills before and after taking part in the programme. Learn more about the assessment activities involved here.
By comparing the progress of pupils who have completed the programme with those who have not yet started, we can understand how effective the RILL programme is in improving key literacy skills.
Below, we outline each of the seven stages of the study in more detail. Click on each section to expand and learn more about what is involved.
(September-October 2023)
Teaching Assistants (TAs) will attend a day-long, in person training session.
Pupils in Years 3 and 4 will complete Reading Screen in class with their teacher (we will provide all necessary training and support).
Class teachers and/or TAs will use scores from the Reading Screen to identify up to 12 pupils who might benefit from completing the RILL programme (we will help and support teachers/TAs in doing this). These pupils might find reading and writing difficult.
Pupils who are selected will be invited to complete the programme.
Pupils who are able to take part will be randomly placed into one of two groups:
Around 6 pupils will be placed in Group 1 (intervention group).
Around 6 pupils will be placed in Group 2 (waiting control group).
All 12 pupils engaging in the programme need to have consent from their parents/guardians before proceeding to the assessment stage.
TAs will help pupils complete assessment activities via an online platform.
TAs will also take part in small focus groups about their experiences in using the programme.
Group 1 (intervention group) completes the RILL programme (40 minutes a lesson, twice a week for 15 weeks) with a TA.
Group 2 (waiting control group) continues as normal (without RILL).
We will provide support to schools and TAs in delivering the programme.
