The programme is primarily designed for pupils identified as having literacy and language difficulties, using ReadingScreen assessments. We typically invite up to 12 pupils to take part in the programme in each setting. Where fewer than 12 pupils are identified as having difficulties (scores below 85), schools may include additional pupils within the average range (scores 85–115), who will also benefit from strengthened foundational literacy skills and reduced risk of future learning loss.
We recommend inviting up to 12 pupils to take part in the lessons, based on the capacity of the staff member and the needs of the pupils.
We do not set limits on the number of staff that can be trained. We do however recommend that more than one staff member is introduced to the programme so that the RILL teacher has support within the school.
Staff training consists of some independent work followed by a full day of live training. We expect the school to allocate time to train staff.
