Until 680 BC, the games included only athletic disciplines. A two-wheeled chariot race with horse-drawn carriages was newly included. It was called tethrippon and took place outside the stadium, on the so-called hippodrome. The 37th Olympic Games underwent another change, now not only men but also juniors could participate. At the first Games, they competed only in the stadium run and the wrestling. The Games were at first only one day, but gradually became longer, and in their heyday (468-400), they were already five days long. Greek sources list as many as 18 competitive events.
The word ekecheria is a very important word in ancient Greece. Translated, it means "hands off". It was about sacred peace. All wars were stopped, and lawsuits were postponed. The competitors, their coaches, and the spectators were able to travel fearlessly through all the territories to Olympia
The first modern Olympic Games were officially opened on 6 April 1896 by King George I of Greece. This was the Summer Olympics, the first Winter Olympics were held almost three decades later. Athletes gathered from 14 countries and were originally to compete in 10 sports and 43 disciplines. Due to bad weather, the sailing competitions were not held. Nine other sports were fencing, weightlifting, athletics, cycling, gymnastics, swimming, shooting, wrestling and tennis.
Football is one of the oldest Olympic sports, having been part of the Games since 1900 until today, with the exception of 1932. It is the first team sport in the Olympic Games. The men's tournament has 16 teams, while the women's tournament (since 1996) has 12 teams. Since 1992, the IOC has introduced a rule where only the men's tournament can participate in players under the age of 23, except for three players. Perhaps the biggest surprise is the most successful men's team - the Hungarian footballers won a total of three gold, one silver and one bronze medals
Golf appeared in the Olympics for a total of three times, the first time in 1900 and 1904, but due to low ratings during the Games, the IOC did not include it further. Only after more than 100 years, in 2009 in Copenhagen, the IOC members met and decided to reintroduce golf to the the programme of the Rio 2016 Games
Most sports have changed over the 100+ year history of the Olympics, whether by equipment, technology or just visually. Sailing is one of these sports - boats have changed the overall design, becoming smaller, lighter and faster.
Archery lasted on the Games programme only until 1920, becoming an Olympic sport again 52 years later in Munich. Archery is one of the first sports to include women in its disciplines - they competed as early as 1904 in Saint Louis. The current tournament includes four disciplines - men's, women's, men's team and women's team tournaments (World Archery, 2019).
Newly included sports at the Summer Olympics are the following: Trampoline, Taekwondo and Triathlon (since 2000), Long Distance Swimming and BMX Racing (since 2008), 3v3 Basketball, BMX Freestyle, Karate, Sport Climbing, Skateboarding and Surfing (since 2020). This year (2024), there will be a new inclusion of Breakdancing in the Olympic Games.
