The origins of the Olympic Games go deep into history, when ancient Greece laid the founding ideals and values for this magnificent event. According to Greek historians, the first Games were held in 776 BC. From that year onwards they were held every 4 years and the period between the games was called the Olympics. The Olympic Games had a very modest origin, initially having only one discipline. It was a one-stadium race, approximately 192 metres. The Games lasted only one day and the programme and length of the Games remained unchanged for the next 12 Games. It was not until the 18th Games in 708 BC that the non-running sports were expanded. These were the sports of wrestling (palé) and pentathlon.
General
In ancient Greece, there were fewer sports than today such as stadium, pentathlon, javelin, wrestling, boxing, pagination and horse races.
The first Olympic Games in 1896 included nine sports, the number of which has since grown rapidly. Until 1924, the sports in the Olympics were decided by the organisers of the Games themselves, after which this authority passed to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Since 1936, there have been only two occasions when a sport has been dropped from the Olympics and then put back on the programme. This happened with baseball and softball.
Field and track events: It is one of the most important sports. There are 3 categories: races, throwing, and jumping. In ancient years, athletics was called pentathlon and there were 5 sports: races, javelin, discus, jumping, and wrestling.
Races: In the past, athletes ran bare feet in a straight line. Now, the race starts at the curve and it finishes at a straight line. They ran on hard terrain and without clothes. This race was called stadium.
Football: it was called ''episkyros'' because there were black stones on the corners of the field. There were 7 players in a team. The ball was made of pig skin and filled with hay.
Basketball : Until the Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, the 12 teams were divided into 2 groups of 6 teams. The first 4 teams of each group qualified in knock-out games. After Rio De Janeiro, there are 3 groups of 4 teams and they play fewer games. So, athletes don't get tired or injured.
Boxing:It was a violent sport. Arms were wrapped with leather bands from elbow to fists. Fingers were uncovered. Bands had spikes or lead marbles.
Hammer Throw: In the past athletes threw a hammer made by a blacksmith.
