Liceul Teoretic „Aurel Vlaicu” Breaza

A story told with elegance, nostalgia, and… wings

Prologue – Where history breathes mountain air

In a world racing toward the future, we pause for a moment… and return to where everything began.

Some places require no elaborate introduction. You recognize them by the way they make you breathe. Breaza is one of those places—a corner of the world where the air is pure and time seems unhurried.

Here, between gentle hills and ancestral stories, a school took root—one that has taught generations not only how to write correctly, but how to live beautifully. It is called Liceul Teoretic „Aurel Vlaicu” Breaza (Aurel Vlaicu Theoretical High School, Breaza) — a school that carries in its spirit a trace of flight worthy of its namesake.

1. Deep roots in Breaza soil (1838–1951)

Every stone, every desk, every echo of the school bell carries a story. The first page of this story was written in 1838, when Scarlat Ghica, the noble owner of the Breaza estate, decided that the people in the area needed a proper school. That is how the idea of a “factory of minds” began to take shape on his land.

Most likely, he never imagined that nearly two centuries later, students in Breaza would learn foreign languages and computer science, and—metaphorically, for now—soar toward universities around the world.

Thus, the first school in Breaza was founded — an act of generosity, but also of vision. Who could have imagined that nearly 200 years later, on the same hills, there would be a school bearing the name of a pioneer of flight? Ghica did not know he was planting the seed of a tradition that would grow alongside the town.

Time passed, but the desire to learn remained constant. Around 1927, a new educational chapter began: Școala Atelier de Instruire Casnică (School of Domestic Instruction), later Școala Inferioară de Meserii (Lower School of Trades), and, for a period, Liceul Industrial de Fete (Girls’ Industrial High School). Girls learned tailoring and etiquette; boys discovered airplanes and mathematics. It was a serious school, complete with uniforms and discipline, yet full of the charm of an era when registers were written in ink and respect was valued as highly as knowledge.

2. 1951–1954 – When a dream becomes an institution

In the uncertain years that followed the war, as Romania searched for direction, the foundations of a high school began to take shape in Breaza. The school year 1951–1952 marks the beginning: the first classes of the institution that would eventually become Liceul Teoretic „Aurel Vlaicu” Breaza (Aurel Vlaicu Theoretical High School, Breaza).

It operated in two different buildings and had a dormitory with 147 beds, tucked behind the Magazinul Universal (Universal Department Store).

It was a simple world, yet full of enthusiasm: few teachers, but deeply passionate; students, nervous but curious. The school smelled of chalk, notebooks were carried in paper bags, and the school bell sounded like a promise.

In 1954, a group of local intellectuals — Areta and Radu Bâcu, Elena Aitel, and other visionary teachers — took the decisive step: they formally established Liceul Teoretic „Aurel Vlaicu” Breaza (Aurel Vlaicu Theoretical High School, Breaza).

The chosen name was a declaration of intent. Aurel Vlaicu — the engineer who dared to challenge the sky with his own hands — became the symbol of a school that would teach generations that flight begins first in the spirit, long before it reaches the wings.

2.1. Strada Republicii nr. 69 – A home then and now

In 1962, the high school found its permanent home — the building on Strada Republicii nr. 69 (69 Republicii Street), a place that has seen it all: the first graduating classes, reforms, energetic headmasters, legendary teachers, thick registers, and bustling recesses.

It is the kind of building where staircases echo, where hallways smell like the beginning of a lesson, where the blackboard has witnessed more history than any textbook, and where each desk could tell a coming-of-age novel.

Here, the first celebrations were held: first school shows, first graduation emotions. Here, in time, graduates returned — now doctors, teachers, architects, engineers, artists — each carrying the nostalgia of their own classroom.

3. The Industrial Years – The Art of Endurance (1970–1994)

During the 1970s and 1980s, the high school adapted to the transformations of the era. It became an industrial high school for a time, then returned to the theoretical profile — yet it never lost what mattered most: the Vlaicu spirit.

A spirit that is curious, cultivated, disciplined, sometimes ironic — but never dull.

Students learned physics and literature with equal passion. Some dreamed of aircraft, others of poetry. Teachers managed the impossible: they taught, guided, shaped character — and sometimes repaired a broken radiator between classes.

In September 1980, a significant reorganization took place. Școala Centru Breaza (Breaza Central School) was separated from the high school, taking grades I–VIII. The high school continued with upper secondary education, though the relationship between the two institutions remained close.

A decade later, in 1994, the two reunited under the same name, restoring unity and the school’s original identity: Liceul Teoretic „Aurel Vlaicu” Breaza.

The world was changing, yet Vlaicu preserved its essence: a serious school, remarkably resilient to the passage of time.

       3.1. Numbers With a Heartbeat

From 59 students in its first year, enrollment grew steadily: • 398 students in 1953–1954 • 425 students in 1959–1960 • 1,690 students in 1979–1980

Numbers, yes — but behind each one stands a face, a story, a voice in the end-of-year choir.

In the 1980s, the schoolyard was full, recesses were noisy, and students ran between classes with notebooks under their arms and big dreams on their minds. Teachers were professors, mentors, and sometimes counsellors — guiding a golden generation shaped by chalk and hope.

In the 2023–2024 school year, the Liceul Teoretic „Aurel Vlaicu” Breaza network included 1,670 students and preschoolers, organized into 76 classes and groups, supported by an impressive team of nearly 150 teachers, auxiliary, and administrative staff.

This is more than a statistical record. It is a living community, growing together with the town.

The two main high school profiles —

Real: Matematică-Informatică (Sciences: Mathematics & Computer Science)

Uman: Filologie – Engleză intensiv (Humanities: Philology – Intensive English)

— continue to attract students from across Prahova county, confirming the school’s reputation. Here, learning is a balance between reason and emotion, logic and sensitivity — between what you know and who you become.

4. Achievement and Flight (1987–1991)

The late 1980s and early 1990s brought both reforms and notable academic results. In the 1987–1988 school year, students earned important awards: • First place in geography • Distinctions in Romanian • Awards in biology, French, and Russian

These results strengthened the school’s prestige and reflected its commitment to nurturing talent across disciplines.

5. The 2000s — Transition to Modernity

After the year 2000, the school embraced a new era of modernization:

• updated academic tracks

• new laboratories and equipment

 • digital learning resources

• European projects and international collaborations

Alongside its established Philology – Intensive English and Mathematics–Informatics profiles, new opportunities emerged: debate clubs, student magazines, competitions, creative workshops — all enriching daily school life.

And perhaps most importantly, Vlaicu preserved an essential balance: discipline paired with humanity.

Education here has always been less about grades and more about people.

Teachers may not take themselves too seriously — but they take their students seriously.

At Vlaicu, irony and self-irony are signs of intelligence, not superiority.

6. Vlaicu Today — Deep Roots, Wide Wings

More than seventy years later, Liceul Teoretic „Aurel Vlaicu” Breaza looks toward the future with the calm confidence of an institution that knows it has served its mission well.

Today, the high school is more than a single building: it is a complete educational network — a family of schools and kindergartens growing together.

6.1. Structure of Liceul Teoretic „Aurel Vlaicu” Breaza — A network of education, community, and continuity

The history of a school is not measured only in years and generations, but also in its branches — in all the places where the sound of the school bell carries the same echo.

Over time, Liceul Teoretic „Aurel Vlaicu” Breaza has grown not only in reputation but also in scope, becoming the core of an educational network that brings together schools and kindergartens across the town.

Today, the institution functions as a legally recognized educational unit under the coordination of the Inspectoratul Școlar Județean Prahova (Prahova County School Inspectorate) and administers nine distinct structures — from colourful kindergartens to lower secondary schools preparing future high school students.

6.1.1. Sediul Central (Main Campus) — The heart of Vlaicu

The main campus is located on Strada Republicii nr. 69  — the heart and symbol of the school.

Here, in bright classrooms and modern laboratories, high school students learn to think freely, to communicate, to create, and to discover their calling. This is also where the administrative centre is located: the principal’s office, the secretariat, the teachers’ room — the places where decisions are made, traditions are safeguarded, and the school’s future is built day by day.

On the same street, at nr. 94 (94 Republicii Street), stand buildings B and C. They expand the instructional space with classrooms, specialized rooms, laboratories, and memories of their own.

Few know that nearby stands the historic building of Școala Generală nr. 1, inaugurated in 1911 — today part of the high school’s heritage ensemble and a silent witness to Breaza’s educational evolution.

6.1.2. Școlile gimnaziale arondate (Associated Lower Secondary Schools)

Roots that nourish the trunk

Under the umbrella of Liceul Teoretic „Aurel Vlaicu” Breaza, three lower secondary schools are affiliated. They form the bridge between childhood and adolescence, preparing future high school students.

          6.1.3. Grădinițele (Kindergartens)

Where education finds its voice

Early childhood education is the root of every generation. Under the coordination of the high school, six kindergartens function — each with its own spirit, colours, energy, and dedication. They are the places where children say their first poems, ask their first questions, and build their first dreams.

6.2. A network that grows with the town

This complex structure — three lower secondary schools and six kindergartens — makes Liceul Teoretic „Aurel Vlaicu” Breaza a complete educational ecosystem, accompanying children from the age of three through high school graduation.

It is a model of educational continuity — a guarantee that every stage of learning (pre-primary, primary, lower secondary, and high school) nurtures the same values, the same vision, the same spirit.

Teachers and educators collaborate; projects connect across levels; families feel that their children are not sent simply “to a school,” but into a community that grows together.

7. A European School, Rooted in Its Community

Liceul Teoretic „Aurel Vlaicu” Breaza is not an ivory tower but an open school — open to the world, yet deeply connected to its community.

The institution participates actively in local, national, and international partnerships, civic and cultural initiatives, and educational projects that expand students’ horizons.

In the past, we wiped chalkboards; today we erase preconceptions. From creative writing workshops to digital projects, from ecological campaigns to cultural festivals, the Vlaicu spirit stays youthful and adaptable.

Here, tradition is not a burden — it is a launching pad. Perhaps this balance — between old and new, between local roots and global vision — is what allows Vlaicu to remain a pillar of education, a school that never grows old but continually refines itself.

8. A Community With a Soul, A School That Breathes

What defines this school best is not its walls, but its people.

Teachers — demanding, yet kind. Students — curious, sometimes chaotic, but bright. Parents — involved and proud.

It is a subtle equilibrium between rigor and gentleness. Between homework and festivals. Between seriousness and joy.

Here, students learn about integrals and irregular verbs — but also about life. Here, teachers know that a good lesson begins with a smile and ends with a good question. The laughter at the end of class is worth just as much as a top grade in the register.

In the teachers’ room, conversations flow from pedagogy to everyday stories. In the schoolyard, students debate big themes — love, the future, the meaning of life — between two rounds of football.

And somewhere in this blend of curiosity, emotion, humor, and learning — the miracle of education happens: the miracle of helping every child grow into someone who knows how to think for themselves.

Instead of an Epilogue — The Lesson of Flight

Years pass. Textbooks change, uniforms change, technology changes. But something remains unchanged:

The light shining in the eyes of those who walk through the school gates for the first time. The quiet at the start of class, when the school bell rings like a promise.

Generations of dreamers have passed through here, learning that school opens paths and shapes destinies — and that the greatest lesson is courage: the courage to believe in yourself, even before the world knows how to read you.

Today, the school looks different — modern buildings, equipped laboratories, international programs, digital resources, and dreams that cross borders. And yet, its essence remains: a place where teachers shape character, and students discover who they are meant to be.

We treasure the past, live the present, and build the future — with the same passion with which Aurel Vlaicu built his aircraft.

And since we carry his name, we like to believe that every day, in our classrooms and hallways, someone’s wings begin to unfold — sometimes, perhaps, alongside the lark, as a poet born not far from here once imagined.

Because At Vlaicu, dreams learn to fly. And once they take off, they rarely return to the ground.

Liceul Teoretic ‘Aurel Vlaicu’ Breaza

Excellence through tradition. Tradition through people. People with wings.
