Guiding Questions:

  • How are women and gender roles portrayed in the media?

  • How is patriarchy present in the media?

  • What does feminist media look like?

Unit Sequence:

  • On Day 1, students participate in an idea wave station activity about gender and the media. They then take notes on cycle of socialization.

  • On Day 3, students conduct a feminist analysis of "UnPretty" by TLC and "Formation" by Beyonce.

  • On Days 4-7, students work in groups to conduct a feminist analysis of a song and music video of their choice. Students demonstrate their understanding through an individual in-class writing assignment and a group presentation.

Notes on Materials Included:

  • There is no unit plan, but the unit slides (titled "Week 17") outline each day of instruction. The folder includes examples of presentations created by past students.

  • Note that this unit was created for 11th grade students and 9th graders will most likely need more time and scaffolding to complete the project.
