EthicSphere is a youth organization funded by Yaxin (Amy) Sun and Xiqiao (Kiara) Sun, a study hub for all lovers of the humanities and philosophy to put their own thoughts and opinions into practice. Humanities in Action! It is our mission to feel subtle but act heavy. We want to make a change -- change the world washed by coldness; change those hearts covered with silence; and change those forgotten meanings of our history and ethics. 

Teens, let's philosophize! 

Dear EthicSphere participants and friends, 

We are the founders of EthicSphere Youth Organization. We are writing to explain why we started this program. 

As lovers of the humanities, we feel a sense of emptiness in learning these interesting and serious subjects. We asked ourselves, "Why is it so lonely to study philosophy and the humanities?" We found out that this problem is not rare because there are fewer relevant opportunities to guide students in learning the humanities. Alongside our journey of studying philosophy and the humanities, we see many students who want to say something but end up hiding themselves because they are too young to be seen. 

One student told me, "I want to turn my vulnerability into empathy, and use that to change the others." Yes, vulnerability is never a weakness; it is a strength that many people are not capable of sensing in those subtle changes. Another girl told us she wouldn't share any ideas in class because she thought her ideas weren't important, since they wouldn't help her with exams and tests. During her senior year in high school, she realized that tests and exams are not decisive in what counts as good. She said, "This realization changed my life, and I want to help more people who are like the past me reach this realization." We, as the founders of EthicSphere, feel the exact same way. 

In our K-12 education system, philosophy and other humanities subjects, which emphasize thinking and logic, are replaced by English classes that teach people to write robotic, generalized essays rather than capturing students' real thoughts. It is not enough to stop at the superficial layer of summarizing and explaining. We need thinking, exploring, and innovating. Moreover, the humanities began with sharing and discussion, whereas our school classes do not adequately encourage students to do so. Those who want to share, or who want to become more confident about sharing, should have such a platform to help them do so. It becomes our mission: Humanities in Action. We advocate for turning our knowledge of the humanities into real actions that can change the world. Just like what we are doing -- helping students to share and advocate for their ideas -- is our philosophy of life.
