ETHICS IN DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH:
`DOING NO HARM´ TO RESEARCH STAFF WHEN CONDUCTING RESEARCH IN THE GLOBAL SOUTH

Welcome! We are an interdisciplinary team of researchers who aim to shed light on an aspect of ethics in development research that has largely gone overlooked in previous discussions: The dynamics and scope of ethical challenges as they pertain to research staff collecting data in low- and middle-income countries (oftentimes referred to as conducting "field" research").

The purpose of this project is twofold:

First, we aim to identify and synthesize the evidence on ethical challenges faced by local and international research staff involved in field research in the Global South. Second, we aim to critically assess and review existing ethical guidelines and protocols that seek to address and alleviate these challenges. Third, we will work on developing implementable solutions that will safeguard research staff when working in the Global South and that take into account:

a) the specific complexities linked to research in low- and middle-income countries

b) the protection of local and international research staff on all hierarchical levels.

This project runs from 2019 to 2025.
