This course is designed to progressively build upon new skills and concepts while drawing directly from community experience—yours included. Attendance and punctuality is vital to your academic success. Your presence will be recorded via a virtual sign-in sheet.
Email me if you need to be absent. It is your responsibility to consult with your classmates for missed class material/information.
After FOUR (4) absences, you may be dropped from the course without notice.
Sometimes our educational journeys get disrupted by life circumstances beyond our control. We may have to drop or withdraw from a course during the academic term for personal reasons.
If you wish to drop the course, you must do so officially through Self Service or at the Admissions and Records office, or risk receiving an F as a final grade.
If you have not attended class (or logged into our Canvas course) within the first week of the term, you will be considered a "no show." As such, you may be dropped to create room for students on the waitlist and to ensure you are not charged any fees.
I do not accept late work.
I understand that life can turn upside down at any given moment. If you have come upon an extenuating circumstance, you may request for an extension by completing the form below. Be an advocate for yourself and stay connected with me through your learning journey. Know that I'm always rooting for you.
After FOUR (4) missed assignments, you may be dropped from the course without notice.
Do not submit other writing as your own-- this includes human-generated or digitally/computer-generated text, such as via ChatGPT or Grammarly.
Doing so is plagiarism: a form of cheating or fraud when a student misrepresents the work of another as their own (i.e., whole sentences and paragraphs written by another person) without appropriate acknowledgment.
If you wish to use AI composition software in this course, you must ask for permission first. Without my permission, your academic integrity is at risk.
Academic misconduct (or cheating) is not just "against the rules." It violates the assumptions at the heart of all learning. It destroys the mutual trust and respect that should exist between student and professor. It is unfair to students who earn their grades honestly.
Any form of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated and is grounds for an F.
Write from the heart.
Quote from your sources and include your own ideas.
Paraphrase from your sources and include your own ideas.
1st time: You'll receive zero points, a warning, and a reminder about our policy.
2nd time: You may be reported to the Dean of SSHAPE and receive an F grade for the class.
I will follow protocol and check writing submissions for the use of AI-generated text and/or plagiarism. If either is detected in your work, I will reach out to you to open up conversation and address it. There is space for compassion and grace in these conversations.
Some of us may not feel confident in our writing skills, so we turn to AI tools like Grammarly or Chat GPT to do the work. As specified above, if you wish to use AI composition software, you must ask for permission first. Without permission, your academic integrity is at risk.
To proofread your writing for grammar or spelling before submission, you may use Microsoft Word or Google Docs. To find more appropriate terms, you may use a thesaurus at any time. Google Translate may be used sparingly or wisely. Using Google Translate for entire sentences or paragraphs will trigger plagiarism checker tools and I'll be reaching out to you to talk more in depth about your writing process.
The crux of our work is to speak our raw truth to power. In Ethnic Studies, the use of AI tools sheds our authenticity and weakens connection in our learning community.
If these parameters worry you, connect with me. If they trouble you, you always have the option to drop our course.
