Excited to have you join ETH 10: Intro to Ethnic Studies. Our 16-week semester course begins: Monday, January 29, 2024. The course will be visible on Canvas on that day.
My name is Dr. Nievera-Lozano and I have been teaching for over a decade across different institutions in the Bay Area (at EVC for 5 years) in the fields of education, ethnic studies, and gender studies.
I'm really excited to collaborate with scholars like you in the physical classroom space. It's been a minute!
This is your syllabus. Please read it in its entirety to stay ready each week. You’ll find so many answers to your questions here.
If you can't find an answer here, reach out to me at melissa-ann.nievera-lozano@evc.edu.
Looking forward to building with you!

Your attendance and participation in class will be integral to our collective learning experience in the course. The success of this course relies heavily on daily collaborative projects, largely conducted in groups we’ll call Fam Bams. Speaking in class, sharing outside resources, announcement of pertinent events and news, engaged listening/witnessing, attending office hours, and various forms of engagement will be honored. You are responsible for: regularly checking Canvas for the syllabus, readings, project assignments, as well as any important announcements; informing me of any emergency situations that conflict with your learning and progress; obtaining notes from colleagues; keeping track of your own attendance; and saving all of your assignments in the event of a grade discrepancy.
*Weekly assignments are due Thursday nights at 11:59pm, unless otherwise noted. If you find any difficulty in meeting regular deadlines, reach out to me directly so we can create an alternative plan together for your success.
PLEASE NOTE: after FOUR (4) assignments may be dropped from the course without notice.
To access our course, you will sign into your Canvas portal. The course shell will not be available until the first day of class.

We acknowledge that we gather at Evergreen Valley College on the unceded aboriginal homeland of the Tamien Nation, past, present, and future. We honor with gratitude the Tamien People who teach us that our relationship with the land is reciprocal, and we must work in unison to keep the world in balance. As educators we believe in the power of words and make this land acknowledgement as a commitment to partner and advocate for a more equitable and inclusive future.
