What is teenage pregnancy?
Teenage pregnancy is a widespread reproductive health related phenomenon with well-established causes as well as negative effects and consequences on a person's health, society, and economy. Pregnancy in a woman under the age of 20 is referred to as the so-called teenage pregnancy. However, a young woman who is 12 or under and pregnant fits this definition of teenage pregnancy as well even though she is not a teenager technically.
What's so bad about teenage pregnancy?
A higher risk of health issues like preeclampsia, anemia, contracting STDs (sexually transmitted diseases), premature delivery, postpartum hemorrhage, and poor mental health outcomes is linked to teenage pregnancy. Violence and depression are more prevalent in teenage mothers, which can raise the risk of mental disorders. With inadequate complementary feeding and breastfeeding, frequent infections, inadequate food, health, and care, mothers who are in poor maternal health are more likely to have low birth weight babies. The cycle continues through the generations as the low birth weight baby grows into a stunted child, teenager, and finally a malnourished pregnant woman who has another low birth weight baby. Since some teenage pregnancies are either unintended or unwanted, their bodies may compete with growing fetuses while carrying them for nutrition and they may not be psychologically prepared to nurse babies after delivery. Poor health outcomes can also result from nutrition ignorance. (National Nutrition Council, 2021)
