Podcasts have long been regarded as democratising in the media world because of the simplicity involved in producing them. Only very basic software and equipment is required to produce a podcast with the steps involved summarised below. An infographic from RSS summarising these 7 steps can also be download for future use by clicking here.
You have an idea for a podcast topic? Great! Now ask yourself: Who is your ideal listener? What would they be interested in knowing about the topic of your podcast?
What sub-topics can you use to structure the episodes of your podcast around the topic of interest you picked?
Consider whether you want to make use of interviews, storytelling, educational or a conversational style format for your podcast.
Basic equipment needed to start includes a computer/mobile phone, some recording and editing software, and a hosting platform.
Time to pick a name for your podcast and get recording. When you're recording, always try to make sure you're in a place with as little background noise as possible. Also, slow your speaking pace a bit and pause between sentences (this will make editing much easier!)
The trick to a good podcast is a good edit, and branding. Edit your work, gather or design the artwork for your podcast, write a description of the episode and then upload your podcast to your chosen hosting platform.
Develop and implement a marketing plan for your podcast. Upload it to your host of choice and then connect the RSS feed to the major podcasting platforms. Finally, continue recording more episodes to help you grow your podcast channel!
If you’d like a more detailed exploration of how to approach creating a podcast, here is a link to a free e-book by Jill Olmsted. Olmsted is a professor in journalism at the American University where she presents lectures on podcasting and also consults on the legal aspects of creating podcasts.
Alternatively, Ross Winn hosts a fantastic podcast series titled Podcasting Simplified which we can highly recommend should you like to explore creating your own podcast using the auditory medium of podcasts themselves. Winn is the CEO of Quandary media and runs the popular podcast education site, Podcast Insights.
Podcasting is a great DIY project, with tons of resources you can use for self study online. Colleagues of ours recently developed another Open Educational Resource on the perks and methods for DIY learning, and we highly recommend you check it out!
To further help you along the path of picking the right equipment and software should you want to set out on your own podcasting adventures, we have compiled a small podcaster’s toolbox that might be of some assistance on your journey.
