Strengths

  • Camtasia is a leading screen capture and video editing software used by millions around the world.

  • It is easy to learn and user friendly allowing non-professionals to make professional quality videos. The software has features that cater to educators and trainers who want to make simple instructional type videos for their students, clients, or co-workers.

  • Creates vibrant and interactive videos as well as having impressive video overlays and green screen capabilities.

  • It has a simple to use yet high resolution screen recorder. The user can capture full screen or smaller sections of their screen.

  • Costs less than many of it's competitors such as Adobe and Articulate products.

  • Can upload directly to websites like YouTube and Vimeo and cloud storage services like Google Drive and Screencast.com

  • Numerous features and substantial library of free content to use in your videos like animations, audio clips, templates, cursor effects, etc. (900,000 royal-free assets)

  • TechSmith offers great support and customer service including how-to tutorials and troubleshooting videos. They are also quick to respond to customer issues and concerns.

Challenges and Competition

  • The challenges with Camtasia seem to center on its lack of customization. It is mainly a video editing software for beginners so there are limits on what can be done using this software. This could push away customers who are looking for more customizable videos for their organization.

  • Costs are still high for the beginner user. There a number of cheaper competitors out there for users who just want simple videos.

  • A lot of Camtasia's updates over the years have been necessary to fix bugs and crashing issues. TechSmith says that these issues are fixed in their latest version, Camtasia 2020, but this remains to be determined.

  • There is a lot of competition out there including: Adobe Premiere Pro, Filmora, OBS Studio, Final Cut Pro X, iMovie, and Movavi Video Editor, etc. Each of these products offer similar features but have their own pros and cons. Camtasia has to continue to deliver a top notch product in order to continue to stay near the top of this highly competitive market.

Growth and Potential

  • Developers at TechSmith continue to modify and update Camtasia making sure that is the best product out there for it's customers. They conduct internal and external reviews to ensure they are meeting the demands of their users and the market. For instance having been criticized for lacking user templates in Camtasia, they listened to their customers advice and in their 2020 edition added 50 templates for users to choose from.

  • According to Enlyft, 70% of users are in the United States so there is definitely potential to get their product into other countries. TechSmith would have to work on their language compatibilities in order to make this happen.

  • According to Mary Meeker's 2019 Report, video and image communication is extremely popular and a growing market. TechSmith has always understood this and continues to deliver on this demand for visual communication. From 2017 to 2018 they conducted their own research study on the value of visuals and reported that their is huge market potential for visual workplace communication. They estimated that there is the potential to unlock $161 billion in productivity if companies invest in visual communication. See the video below.

“We’ve always known that visuals are essential to the effectiveness of communication, and therefore are essential to instruct and inspire. The essential findings of this study are, first, that visuals matter even more than most assume and second, there is an urgency for leaders to adapt as employee demographics change.” - Wendy Hamilton, CEO- TechSmith
