The beginning of any semester can often feel overwhelming as you get started with multiple new classes and teachers. I am going to front load the work for this class so that the beginning of this course will feel heavy but if you keep up with everything, then end of the semester will lighten in this class so that when other courses start ramping up you can put more time into them.
Read this page carefully and you'll have have everything you need in order to get started on the right foot and make a strong start to this course.
Access to your RCC Email
Access to your Canvas course management system
Access to a computer that is running Microsoft Windows, Mac OS, or Linux and is connected to the internet. The best case scenario is that you have a personal laptop that you can bring to each class. However, computers will be available during class if you don't have the ability to bring one.
A notebook and pen for class use.
Go to your Canvas page and set up your profile if you haven't done that yet. Please make sure to include a picture of your beautiful face!
This is a 32 question survey that help's me to get an idea of who you are and what you all know as a class. There is absolutely NO right or wrong answer, so fill it out as honestly as you are comfortable with.
I thought about running it anonymously but I want to know how I can help you INDIVIDUALLY and want to see how you grow over the semester. So once again, I reiterate, it does not matter in any way shape or form where you are. It's simply a starting point for the class.
Please create an e-Portfolio SHELL. I recommend Google Sites as they are very simple and I know it best so will be able to help you when you need it. However, Wix is another common one as is Portfolium. You can choose whichever one of them you feel most comfortable with.
My goal for this project is that you will be able to walk out of this class with a complete e-Portfolio page that will contain labs and resources that you can continue to use well into your teaching career.
This project is what your final grade for this class will be based on, so start building with the goal of continually building, adding, tweaking as we move through this semester.
Your shell should reflect your personality and what YOU will need for your teaching in the future. For this class, however, I would like certain things to be included as pages. This may change throughout the semester, but to get started make sure you include the following pages: Blog, e-Portfolio with SLO 1-SLO 5 as subpages, and About Me.
Once you have gotten started, fill out this Google Form providing me the web address.
Please create a video introducing yourself to me and your classmates and post it in a discussion on Canvas. Details and instructions will be provided on the assignment page. Keep in mind that this video could be used for your About Me page as well.
I would like for you to spend some time thinking about this class, your goals for yourself, and what you would like to specifically take away from this class. Since this is a teaching class, the reflection should be both from your perspective as a student and what you want to learn, as well as from the teacher perspective of what you would like to do in your own classroom.
I would like for you to put your thoughts into the blog page that you have created for your yourself. This response should reflect you and your personality but should include the following:
What are your strengths as a student and as a teacher?
What are your weaknesses as a student and as a teacher?
What you feel most confident about when teaching Earth Science?
What you feel most nervous about when teaching Earth Science?
What are your personal goals for this class? What would you specifically like to have accomplished at the end of your semester?
Anything else you can think of that you would like to record your thoughts and feelings here at the beginning of this journey.
We will be referencing this reflection throughout this semester so be as detailed and candid as you feel comfortable being.
If you prefer video reflections, you are welcome to do one of those instead. Simply post it on the blog in place of a typed response.
Please read the first chapter of Ungrading by Susan Blum and write a response.
This book and its concepts are probably quite new to you and are certainly not common within the academic system that we currently have. What did it make you think and feel? What were some phrases that seemed to stand out to you? Which ones and why? What do you think of this method and is it something you can see yourself using in the future?
Please submit your response to Canvas and respond to 2 of your colleagues.
