Basic policies
For more information, please check the school's official essential handbook/audio podcast on SchoolBridge.
If you have any questions or concerns, please communicate with ELE (HoD) or CBD (HoF).
Inside a classroom
Staff members (support and teaching) are not to be in a classroom with a student regardless of gender without all (majority is fine) curtains / blinds or windows or doors open. This is to eliminate any allegations the student may make against you.
A registered teaching staff member must be present inside a classroom if there are students in it during class or extra-curricular activities. Support staff are not allowed to be in a classroom with students without a registered teaching staff due to health and safety regulations.
Biggest message: IF you are meeting with students, especially a student one-on-one, ensure it is in a public space or public enough so that people can see what is happening.
Students and transport
Staff members (support and teaching) are not to drive one or more students (unless homestay) in their personal vehicle.
IF there is a student who needs transportation:
during school hours (until 4pm): tell the student to go to student centre or reception to call their next of kin. Then, you wait with them until the guardians arrive or if the student tells you they will walk/take public transportation.
after school hours: call a DP and wait for the DP to arrive to sort it out.
in the extremely unlikely event where you receive parental consent to drive a student home, ensure to have another member of staff in your vehicle with you. This is usually pre arranged with your HoD or HoF's awareness. Again, this is to eliminate potential allegations.
note - support staff are to find a teaching staff member immediately instead of doing the steps above
Biggest message: DO NOT OFFER OR VOLUNTEER TO DRIVE A STUDENT HOME UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE.
Contact details and social media
Staff members (support and teaching) are not share personal mobile number or social media accounts with currently enrolled students.
Staff and support staff cannot make videos or social media trending videos eg. TikTok/Instagram with students.
In the unlikely event that a teaching staff or support staff member needs to contact home via phone, they are to use the staffroom phone or the phone in the V7L office. In an even more unlikely event that you do not have access to both school phones eg. lockdown, ensure your phone is on NO CALLER ID (go to your settings) before you contact home.
Biggest message: Regardless of your rapport with your students or whānau, there is a line between 'friendship' and professionalism.
Guidance and Learning Support
To maintain professional consistency and ensure best practice, staff and support staff members outside of the OLC, Pegasus, and Waiora specialist teams are asked to defer to the expertise of the designated staff in these areas. While training is valuable, the school employs specialists for a specific reason as part of the Ministry and Health and Safety policies. Our collective responsibility, as per school policy, is to follow established procedures set by those expert teams.
Teacher aides, please consult with HoD of ESOL before going to the respective areas.
Staff members, please consult with HoD of ESOL or HoF of Languages before going to the respective areas. A reminder that there is a process in place.
Biggest message: DO NOT GO STRAIGHT TO GUIDANCE, OLC OR PEGASUS WITHOUT INFORMING HOF OR HOD FIRST.
