You've seen Olympic fencing before, and found yourself drawn to it. Particularly that one style where fencers wear those silver vests. These athletes seem to fly at each other in coordinated chaos, with blades whipping around so fast you can barely make them out without the slo-mo replay. Yet in all this flash and pomp, with side-eyed glances at a ref who disagrees and all those white and coloured lights, you seem to discern a logic. a sense how a match should be fought, of rules of engagement that need to be followed. Almost like a right way to get certain points...
Foil is one of the three disciplines in fencing, and one involving a set of rules referring to right-of-way that needs to be followed in order to score points. It provides a different experience than the straightforward and visceral hit-first mechanic that dominates épée, and allows for some latitude and flashiness in its execution. Our foil program, run by coach Ryan Downey, offers the rudiments of this discipline as well as a space for more experienced foilists to come and practice their skills, whether to compete or simply to get fit. Enjoy the puzzle that is priority, and develop skills negotiating with referees in the original 'sport' of sword-fighting.
Adult Foil is offered in Riverview on Mondays from 7:30-9:00.
