The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student 6 growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
Unit Plan
For this assignment, I created a unit plan with a partner to be able to assess students over multiple lessons. At the end of the unit, the goal was for them to complete a project that would show all they learned from all the lessons they were taught. This specific unit was on social justice and equality and advocating for those who were suffering from lack of both. Students were in charge of creating a campaign of some sort at the end showing what they learned about social justice and equality in their communities and how others can advocate for it.
This relates to standard 7, "The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student 6 growth, and evaluating student outcomes", because throughout this unit not just would their be informal assessments like asking the students questions or check in's on research being done but there's also that formal assessment at the end. Having both formal and informal for this unit would be helpful to see what areas students need to focus on more and which one's we can move through a little quicker. It will also show if the students are getting what I want them to out of this unit.
From creating this unit plan, I learned how much actually goes into planning a unit. It was the first unit I had planned so I wasn't sure what to expect. However. my partner and I worked well and I was happy with the results. I also learned that assessments have a big role in how you adjust your lessons or if you don't at all. This project was a good learning experience, and good practice, for when I'll have to create a unit for my own class one day.
Informal Assessment and Formal Assessment Research Papers
Above, I attached two research papers, one on informal assessments and the other on formal assessments. For an informal assessment I researched portfolio assessments. For a formal assessment, I research ADOS-2, Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition. For both papers, I described what each assessment was and how they could be used in the classroom. I went over the positives of both assessments too. I also consider ways I might use these assessments with my students one day.
These papers connect to standard 7, "The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student 6 growth, and evaluating student outcomes, because I made myself aware of the possibilities of both informal and formal assessments. I did this so that one day, I would be able to pick the appropriate assessments for my students so that I can successfully monitor student progress and success.
From writing these papers, I learned much more about the variety of assessments and how I could possibly use them to assess my students. I learned that some assessments have better qualities than others. While a lot of work goes into a unit plan, it was a good learning experience to create one.
