The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
This paper I wrote in my Literacy in the Disciplines class. Throughout this paper I talked about how I would teach special education students in each discipline and what modifications/accommodations I would need to do so. I discussed how I would teach them to read. write, and talk in specific disciplines. The paper was meant to reflect on what I had learned all semester on how to teach literacy in each discipline, since each way was different. It helped me collect my thoughts on how I would teach this way one day.
This artifact relates to standard 2, "The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy", because I was able to understand each of the disciplines and how I could teach them to my future special education students. I was able to discuss ways I would teach specifically in the discipline of history.
From creating this artifact I learned that each discipline has a different way to be taught, especially when considering the audience it's being taught to. I also learned how I would gear each discipline more towards special education rather than general education. I did this class in my first semester of junior year, so the start of all my education classes, and I learned a lot.
Student Teaching Lesson Materials
These are materials from two lessons I taught in one of my student teaching placements. The first set of pictures are worksheets I used during a government lesson. The first picture is for the students who were higher functioning in my class and the second picture was material meant for my lower functioning students. Same thing with the math worksheets that are featured. For each lesson I had to provide material to meet each students ability level, and providing different worksheets was one of the ways I did that.
This artifact relates to standard 2, "The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy", because I taught different material in each discipline but I used modifications and accommodations. Since I had knowledge of each discipline going into my student teaching, it was easy for me to differentiate ways I could teach the material to a special education population.
From creating these artifacts I learned that each student is going to learn differently in each discipline, I just have to realize that and adjust. The materials I chose all the time didn't work out every lesson, so I would change it for next time. It was good practice for when I have my own classroom one day.
