The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
I created this lesson during student teaching. It was for reading. During the lesson my students and I read "Anna's Apple Doll". We read the story together and then worked on a worksheet together. They did their spelling practice on their own. Reading was a daily routine for the students so this lesson was meant for that.
This lesson plan connects to standard 6, The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge", because while I wrote one lesson plan, I had 3 different reading groups, at different learning levels, that I had to teach it to. Therefore, I modified things along the way. I recognized where my students were at with their reading and comprehension and I adjusted accordingly. Throughout this lesson, I saw a lot of success from my students and I was happy with how the lesson went.
From writing this lesson plan, I learned that it's very important to understand a students reading level before you even begin to plan a lesson. By doing that with my students, I was able to make the appropriate accommodations and modifications as needed. I also learned more about how I can support my students communication needs. From writing this lesson, I got to learn more about my students ability levels as well.
In my Remediation of Language and Communication Disorders class, I created an adapted book. This was new for me since it wasn't something I had ever done. I had so much fun doing it though. I pictured some of the pages to the left. It was a short story on winter. On each page, students had to find the picture that matched what was occurring on the page and stick it on. Some pages had one sticker to find and some had 2. I created it in attempt to have a story available for students of lower reading levels who need that extra help comprehending the story.
This adapted book connects to standard 6 " The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge", because I recognized that not all my students will read books that look exactly a like. Some might need some with more interaction, such as this one, or just like the everyday book we're used to seeing. Through creating this adapted book I was able to facilitate student reading and learning.
From this experience, I learned how to create an adapted book myself. I had always heard about them and see them, but I never made one on my own. I also learned more about not only using this adapted book for students with reading disabilities but also students with communication disorders. By using this book, students who can't express themselves as well verbally, can use the pictures to do so.
