Analysis of the results of the PISA research indicates that the standard of math and science teaching had remained static throughout most of EU and had fallen behind the standards of other countries studied by the OECD. In EU documents there is mentioned that math and science teaching needs to be improved. PISA results show that the formal math tasks are solved more frequently than tasks related to the real life. Scientists have come to conclusion that frequent formal math tasks solving during the lessons does not ensure higher students’ achievements and motivation.
During the survey carried out in the partner schools it was found that the real life problems during the lessons are solved rarely. And more rarely it happens, when the real life problems are solved in complex – with the use of knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, biology and physics.
In the phase of project preparation the survey was conducted. It showed that in the schools of potential cooperation countries the majority of students think that the knowledge gained in Mathematics and Science lessons will not work in the future. With this project, we want to break this myth and show students that almost every profession is faced with solving math problems. The task of the project is to provide each student with an understanding of processes, regularities, natural phenomena and math models, so that students understand how a scientist-researcher works and why each of us and society in general need basic knowledge of nature, science and technology. A timely approach will encourage students interest in linking their future careers to as many students as possible with science-based industries, becoming not only scientists and engineers, but also setting up their business on the basis of science and math, working as project managers, science communication professionals, and in other sciences related professions. When analyzing the content of textbooks, the educators have come to the conclusion that they do not have tasks in which pupils would be introduced to different professions in parallel with the topic in Math or Science. The content of teaching aids should be supplemented with problem-solving tasks that are tackled by professionals from different sectors on a daily basis.
Pupils with learning difficulties will improve the motivation to learn. By working in international groups it will be possible to cover more different professions and transfer experience. Teachers will improve their professionalism in their subject (math, physics, chemistry, biology), and by teaching this subject with the CLIL method. By participating in a major international project which highlights the opportunities to be gained by mobility within the EU we hope to both raise students’ awareness of the opportunities offered to them in terms of career throughout the EU whilst simultaneously challenging the negative perceptions that do exist regarding regions beyond the students immediate environment.
