Alicante 2019

Our mobility began in September, when we prepared with the students the soap and paper, both recycled, which we would later use in our workshops.

The starting materials are in the proportions indicated:

• 600 grams of used olive oil.

• 80 grams of caustic soda.

• 200 milliliters of water.

The soda is first dissolved in water, slowly and with the necessary protections. The oil is then slowly added. A chemical process called saponification occurs, a process that occurs naturally when a fatty acid and an alkali are brought together.

The whole mixture is stirred for hours, so that the particles of the different elements interact with each other. Then it is poured into a bucket or the desired molds and the drying process will last about a month. Before it dries completely, it shoud be cut into rectangular bars in a very simple way.

Monday November 4th

We gather in the auditorium to receive greetings from the principal. Next, the different participants will show us the presentations of their respective countries and traditions.

The Spanish students present some videos about some of our artisan traditions that will serve as an introduction to the workshops that they will develop during the morning.

We hold three rotating workshops for groups of 15 students

• Workshop for the construction of musical instruments.

• Soap carving workshop.

• Linoleum engraving and paper stamping workshop.

That afternoon we went on a walking tour to the Town Hall. There, the councilor for education of the Alicante City Council welcomed us in the plenary hall and gave us a speech. Thanks to Pablo Rodes for carrying out the simultaneous translation of the speech into English.

Tuesday November 5th

We started the day by heading to Novelda and Monforte del Cid. There we were received by a person in charge of the Regulatory Council of the DOP of the Embolsada del Vinalopó Table Grape. He explained the characteristics of this grape and its regulation as an autochthon production. Unlike other table grapes, the Vinalopó grape grows protected under a paper bag, which protects the fruit from insects, the sun and unfavourable weather conditions for a very long time. It also helps the fruit preserve the colour and the skin without smears so the bunches reach the consumer's hands in the very best conditions.

Next, we visited a vineyard and the handling and packaging facilities.

Going south through the Vinalopó valley we arrive in Puçol to visit the School Ethnological Museum of Puçol. It is a museum that was born as a school project, which has obtained different awards and the primary school students still prepare the guided tours when it coincides with their class hours. https://www.museopusol.com/es/

We take the bus to Santa Pola and cross the landscape of the salt flats and stop to eat near the sea. Once we have eaten, we go to Elche, where we visit the Museum of the Festa.

Later we carry out a palm workshop in one of the places that still work this artisan activity, the one belonging to the Serrano Valero family.

Wednesday November 6th

We took the bus to Banyeres de Mariola. In this place we want to visit the museum and carry out a recycled paper workshop, but much to our regret, the museum was closed in those days due to a reform and we could only take a tour of the Vinalopó river, where paper factories had been installed at the time. specialized in cigarette paper. The guide explained to us all the adaptations that the river underwent to supply its flow to the factories.

Then we headed towards Ibi, the bus took us through the Mariola mountain range to Alcoy and from there we headed towards Finca Daroca in Ibi. In this place we see, and carry out, the entire process of making olive oil: the harvest, the separation of the olives and the leaves, its grinding and the placement of the resulting paste, in layers, in the esportines (or baskets) of the press.

Its subsequent pressing and the natural separation between water and oil. Afterwards we eat in this same center a plate of Manchego gazpacho, typical food of the area.

From there, passing through Tibi, we arrive at Xixona, at the nougat museum. We see the production processes of the different kinds of nougat, from a purely handcraft activity to its current industrial manufacture.

We start with a visit and workshop at I.E.S. Las Lomas, which is a secondary school in the north of our city. This school provides with vocational studies related to the construction of "Bonfires".

Back in the city center the students divide into two groups. Group 1 goes to the Nativity Scene Museum for a workshop and group 2 goes to the MACA (Museum of Modern Art) to see an exhibition and print a T-shirt with the A.R.T.I.S.A.N.S. logo inspired in Eusbio Sempere´s work.

Unfortunately we can not go up to eat to the castle due to the Town hall restrictions, but they enjoy the opportunity to be in the Postiguet beach. Then at 3.30 pm we leave by bus to the Valor chocolate factory in La Vila Joiosa.

On the way back, after a little time to go home, the students visit and dine at the CDT facilities in the Castillo de San Fernando. These facilities are run by trained professionals in the field.
