NHS in Scotland

The NHS in Scotland is one of the largest employers there is [163,617 people at June 2019] and has a budget of around £13.5 billion as at 2018/19.

In 2019, research found that the NHS in Scotland employed 168,194 people. Of these 1,764 were disabled people [1.04% of the total], 5,585 [3.32%] identified as Black Minority Ethnic people, 15,400 [9.12%] identified as Catholic people, and 2,487 [1.47%] identified as Lesbian, Gay or Bi-sexual people.

All of the NHS Board chief executives are aware of these data sets. None of them have indicated plans for any major changes in their workplace cultures and practices to eliminate the discrimination which the data suggests must be present.

The Scottish Government's Cabinet Secretary for Health has also been made aware of the data sets. The government has no plans to require NHS Boards in Scotland to introduce the major changes required to deliver workplaces where employment equality can be evidenced.
