Library Organization

**Under Construction**

A library is a big place, filled with thousands of books. How do you find just the books you need? A librarian is always there to assist you, but you might want to find a book on your own by browsing the shelves or checking the catalog.

Our library is divided into nine sections:

  • Dewey Decimal Numbers

  • Everybody Non-Fiction

  • Graphic Novels (Middle School)

  • Fiction: Popular Series

  • Biographies

  • Everybody Picture Books

  • Beginning Chapter Books

  • Fiction

  • Sunshine State Books

Fiction books are stories that are invented, made up or imagined. The fiction books on the library shelves are arranged in alphabetic (ABC) order according to the author’s last name or surname.

For example, some of my favorite books are written by Patricia Polacco. All of her book will have the letter “P” on the spine. The call number will also be on the spine, E POL. E tells you the book is a picture book and POL tells you the first three letters of the author’s last name.

Practice your alphabetizing skills with the activities below.

  • Use the alphabet sticks and arrange them in ABC Order.

  • Using the call number, arrange the ten books on the table in ABC order.

  • Arrange the series, Natures Children, in ABC order by animal.

Everybody Fiction (picture books)

Everybody (picture books), will have an E on the spine label. This is part of the book's call number. Under the letter E will be the first three letters of the author's last name.

Using the author's last name, the Everybody books are put into alphabetical order on the shelf. This makes locating a book by your favorite author so much easier.

Fiction (chapter books)

Fiction (chapter books) will have FIC on the spine label. You will notice the first three letters of the author's last name below that.

In most libraries, the Fiction books are organized just like the Everybody books; in alphabetical order using the author's last name.

Beginning Chapter Books

These books are for students who are beginning to read chapter books. In our library, these books have a blue label on the spine. This section was created by Junior Librarians in 2022!

As children become more confident readers, they move from beginning readers, leveled readers, to chapter books. Usually these are about a second or third grade level.

When children begin reading chapter books independently, they often find it easiest to read a series. The familiar characters and storylines can help them build confidence and speed as they read chapter books.

Dewey Decimal Books

Non-Fiction lives in the Dewey Decimal section, as well as fiction that hasn't been moved to larger areas in the library.

The top line, which is a number, gives us the book's location on the shelf. This numeric system is known as the Dewey Decimal System. Below the numbers are the first three letters of the author's last name. These books are organized numerically first and then alphabetically by author's last name.

The following website will help you review ABC order, as well as, provide practice for shelving and locating Nonfiction books:

Everybody Non-Fiction

Like the Non Fiction Section, these books are organized by categories. In our library, these books are located in the red section, and have a "light red" (pink) label on the spine.

These books are excellent resources, and have reading levels that are more appropriate for younger readers.

Biography

Biography books will have a B on the first line; beneath the B is the first three letters of the last name of the person about whom the biography or autobiography is written.
