Course Description: Step into the rich tapestry of New York City and explore the history and importance of ethnic enclaves—neighborhoods where culture, tradition, and community thrive. In this 5-day course, you’ll discover how these vibrant communities preserve and share cultural identity in a city (and nation) shaped by constant change.
Through hands-on exploration, discussions, and field trips, you’ll examine how food, language, religion, music, art, and fashion tell the stories of your ancestors. You’ll ask big questions: How are these stories shaped by American culture? How do they, in turn, shape American culture? How can we, as global citizens, preserve and share cultural heritage for the public and residents of cultural enclaves in order to combat gentrification, engage and advocate for the needs of our communities, and celebrate diversity?
By the end of the week, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how communities maintain their heritage while influencing the broader society around them—and you’ll reflect on the ways your own story contributes to the ongoing cultural mosaic of the city. Considering one's own ethnic background, you'll be able to answer the question: Is the United States more of a melting pot or a tossed salad when it comes to the cultural landscape of our nation?
